Choices.........wine, food, exercise etc.

Sounds like the caloric difference is negligible.
<a href=“Calories in a Glass of Wine”>http://wine.about.com/od/wineandhealth/a/Wine-Calories.htm</a>
I often restrict my wine drinking to home before bed. I have a small juice glass full.
I need all the help I can get to go to sleep, and a little wine is good, but more than two drinks makes for fitful sleep.
At bookgroup we like to combine our wine with chocolate, nuts & cheese, but then we are so relaxed we can’t get up.

I have taken several “vacations” from drinking when I feel especially bloated, tired or otherwise not at my best. Taking a temporary break from alcohol for a month or so can help shed pounds and also increases the enjoyment of moderate drinking when you return to it. My H and I enjoy wine with dinner; I am not going to become a teetotaler unless health demands it. But constant habitual drinking becomes a drag on energy, which for me is becoming a precious commodity.

I am not really into fitness but I do go to the gym three times a week and I’m a big believer in weight training. Of all the forms of exercise I have done in my lifetime, weights make the biggest difference. I will lift weights as long as I am physically able. I spend some time on the elliptical for aerobic exercise (I have bad knees and cannot run or do stationery biking), and then I lift weights. I cannot say enough good things about the weight training.

We gave up drinking wine during the week. I’m not interested in giving it up all together. Like conmama, I eat around 1500 calories a day (a little more on weekends) and try to get regular exercise. I never liked getting hot and sweaty, but I do like walking in the neighborhood, hiking on weekends, I go to the gym on Sundays with dh and work out for about 1.5 hours and I try to do something during the week. (Kettleball swings, squats, pushups - things you can do with out actually putting on gym clothes and making it a big production, but enough to get your heart rate up.) There are a bunch of short exercise programs to try: <a href=“The Scientific 7-Minute Workout - The New York Times”>The Scientific 7-Minute Workout - The New York Times; is one or my favorite <a href=“One Month to Muscles”>https://experiencelife.com/article/one-month-to-muscles/</a></p>

I’ve actually started trying to drink more ever since I saw the 60 minute show on what makes people live longer. People who do not drink at all, tend to die younger than those who indulge occasionally. I’m not a drinker. Don’t like the taste or the effects. It takes less than half a glass of anything to make me feel like I can’t function well. But I do want to live longer so I’m trying to have a small glass twice a week. So far it’s not going well. And the study said it didn’t have to be red wine. Any alcohol will do. Which is really good since I cannot stand red wine.

I am also operating on the no wine during the week mode. I have too much work to do with my new job at night, catching up on papers etc, and plus weight, and plus general, probably healthier overall. I really do enjoy a glass or two, and would not give it up entirely unless necessary health-wise.

I am very pleased with how non-judgmental this thread is being. :)

I didn’t know wine had significant calories. I drink a glass with meal. Wine makes meal taste so much better and fulfilling. With a glass of wine, I don’t feel the need for a dessert.

My wife and I drank wine with dinner for years. Now we are cutting all sorts of corners to pay for – wait for it – college tuition. So we stopped drinking wine about 6 months ago. I miss it the most with grilled/roasted meat and pasta dishes. But I survived the transition better than I thought. I have not seen any change in my weight, however, and I really could have used it. :(

I am not that big a drinker but I don’t run out wine, beer and lately hard cider.

DH likes hard cider. Loves to embarrass the boys when he orders it.

Hard cider is excellent with fritta(spell?).

Your evening glass of wine is someone else’s nighttime sweet…or handful of chips, or donut in the morning. Would you say your glass/bowl of whatever is a habit- something that is a given in your day?? That may be where the problem lies. Do the math- give up 3 glasses of regular habit of wine a week and multiply it by 52 weeks - how many calories do you save. Add in one or two times a week of 30mins of exercise in the place of that wine sipping and multiply those calories burned by 52 weeks- how many more calories saved??

A pill or a vegetable or a fad didn’t give you the problem - and one of those wont take it off!!

I also think when one drinks red wine it’s usually go with food dishes that are richer in taste so that’s where also where the calories come from. You wouldn’t drink with a Greek yogurt or salad. White wine is slightly sweeter hence more caloric but it goes with lighter food like fish, seafood and salad.

Well, I don’t want to be a naysayer but I gave up alcohol for two months to see if that would jump start some progress in my weight loss. It didn’t. So I gave up giving up wine.

When I was trying to lose a significant amount of weight, I gave up alcohol. But now I enjoy wine with meals, and craft beers after long runs, and an occasional cocktail when I’m out for dinner. I don’t drink during the week (simply because weekday meals don’t seem deserving of the wine I like) - it’s a weekend indulgence. They’re calories you have to factor in with your other food items - and when I was cutting calories, etc., I preferred food to alcohol. Drinking alcohol definitely makes me eat more!

I like both wine and beer with great food, but I don’t really love the feeling I get when I drink (loved it as a young adult, lol). So I drink pretty rarely - - cocktail parties and at fine dining restaurants by and large. Not much else.

However, I have definitely struggled with my weight plenty because I love chocolate!

I think I’ve pretty much tried all the major diets - - WW, Atkins, paleo, etc.

I do like exercising, thank goodness, so that’s probably why I’m not huge. Did I mention I really love chocolate? Oh, and ice cream? I’m just slightly into the overweight zone BMI wise, but because I exercise, I would say I look normal weight.

I finally have settled into a routine of intermittent fasting (known as 5:2, but I do 4:3). It’s pretty big in Europe. I lost 12 lbs and am keeping it off so there’s that. I still need to lose five more. Not sure if that’s going to actually happen as I’ve been maintaining for awhile. But maintaining is better than going up I guess. I hate counting calories, points, carbs, etc. and this is the first eating plan where I haven’t had to do that and can have my beloved chocolate.

Good luck with your lifestyle changes!! It’s not easy, but I’m sure you’ll do well.

I drink red wine but only on weekends and only when I do not have a pile of work. This weekend we opened a heavenly bottle of red zin called Earthquake. No, it is not named after the 2014 events. :)

BTW, wine has roughly 100 calories per 4 oz glass, but the actual number depends on alcohol and sugar content. Here is a formula that can be used to estimate the content and some tips on how to manage calories from liquids:

http://communitytable.com/249461/allieandmeluncorked/5-ways-to-drink-wine-and-keep-your-waistline/</a></p>

I’ve heard 2014 is a good year for wine, particularly California wines because of the drought, grapes had to reach deeper and develop even banana flavor. So I plan to buy some very good bottles and save it for special occasions and gifts. I can think of 2 but I wont let it pressure my kids.

I usually have a glass of wine w dinner, but am cutting back bcs of calories and am simply drinking water some evenings.

I’ve discovered an entertaining way to exercise: walking VERY briskly on the treadmill and surfing CC

One of the biggest ways people get extra calories without realizing it is by drinking juice.

I don’t drink juice, so I drink wine to make up for it.

My husband usually cooks dinner as he is retired and I am working. We have got in the habit of enjoying a margarita in the evening (I make those). Funnily, we are more likely to have a margarita on a weeknight than on the weekend. I think it is partly because I am usually a bit stressed by my job. Also at weekends we are more likely to be going out so no drink because we will be driving.

I have noticed I have gained some weight the last few months. Lost some earlier this year when I had gallbladder problems followed by surgery and kept it off for a while. Then suddenly it is back plus more (seems sudden). May have to cut back on the margaritas. Really don’t want to though.
