Choices.........wine, food, exercise etc.

I’m coming to dinner at your house!

NJSue, what kind of weight training do you do,machines or free weights?

I use machines, which I know are not considered “real” weights by some, but I have bad knees and cannot do deep squats and deadlifts. My H uses free weights.

"I’ve discovered an entertaining way to exercise: walking VERY briskly on the treadmill and surfing CC "

I surf CC on my iPad when I do planks. :)

So really , it seems that many of you don’t REALLY have the intent or desire to cut down on alcohol to make a nutritional difference - I get it, this is that kind of thread…

I have a daily alcoholic drink. I probably get more calories from OJ and grapefruit juice. I use a lot of ice, but still. Many times they are in combination. I also like V-8 cut with vodka. I’m sure it is a habit, but the drink relaxes me after work, then I start preparing dinner. I’ve 99% stayed away from desserts and ice cream. Those Halloween candies are pretty tempting, though…

Hey, seriously, red wine is indeed good for you.

Well, it was good while it lasted… :-< til post 44 :(

I’m eating an egg white omeletie my husband just made. Don’t think I’ve ever had an egg white omeletie before - it’s good. Healthy too, right? (Won’t mention the reason for the egg whites is I used the yolks making a key lime pie)

We eliminated a lot of liquid calories by eliminating juices completely and by reducing beer and wine consumption to weekends only. I do think it made a difference.

As far as food pairing goes, I’m perfectly fine with pairing my red wine with not so ruch foods like salads and cut up persimmons (my choice of fruit this time of the year).

@BunsenBurner, tell me about persimmons. I don’t “get” them yet.

We cut out significant calories by dropping juices and most other sweetened beverages from our diet. We also reduced carb intake. For us, this worked and lets us have our rare glass of celebratory alcohol and (more frequent) dessert without exercising like fiends or counting calories. For us it’s all about priorities. It works pretty well for us.

Desserts, juice, sweet drinks of any kind, rolls, etc etc, are just not part of my diet anymore. I’m running out of things to give up. Chocolate? Maybe have a piece a couple times a year. I probably miss OJ more.

I did not get them until Mr bought a pack at Costco and I started eating them because I did not want to throw out perfectly fine looking produce… Then I started craving them… I think it is an addictive fruit. They have to be at the prefect state of ripeness though, not too hard, not too mushy.

I have heard of persimmon pudding but never just eating the persimmons. I saw them at Costco Friday and briefly contemplated buying them but then wasn’t sure what to do with them! So you can just eat them raw?

Yup, I cut them up in slices just like apples. Sort of like this:

Chocolate is non-negotiable.

I like to nibble on Ghirardelli 60% cacao bittersweet baking chips.
http://www.ghirardelli.com/store/shop-products/collections/baking-products/60-cacao-bittersweet-chocolate-baking-chips.html</a>
The pieces are small and pack a punch of flavor! Plus, unlike the Nestlé or Hersey’s chocolate chips, the Ghirardelli ones are mostly cacao not sugar. It’s good chocolate.

It sounds wonderful. It’s just not a craving I get very often. I should keep it that way! :)

Given a choice, I would choose my glass of wine.

For years, raising our kids, we had one beer on Friday night with pizza. Wine only on special occasions/holidays. We had to stay sharp. With the kids grown and off, and not holding a paying job, I decided to add an enjoyable vice a decade. Turns out I don’t like that many vices. Do like red wine and bourbon. Have it most every day. Losing my sweet tooth as I age. I only really enjoy handmade chocolates and don’t want more than a couple at a time. When I hit 70, I plan to start every day with a bloody mary. I only do that on vacations now. I am 58. I have given birth. I’m okay with not having a perfectly flat tummy. I’m not okay with having no endurance, so I do my best to keep moving and stay in shape. I can’t really get up on a ladder and paint a two story house all by myself anymore. My arms aren’t strong enough and pushing myself led to some shoulder injuries I’d rather not repeat. Those days are done. I can still walk miles at a time. I can do light construction work that isn’t over my head. Basically though, I’d rather drink a glass of red wine and watch someone else work. And I eat a whole lot of excellent cheese.

adding: I am going to go have wine and cheese right now! : )

Desserts, juice, sweet drinks of any kind, rolls, etc etc, are just not part of my diet anymore. I’m running out of things to give up. Chocolate? Maybe have a piece a couple times a year.>>>>>>>>>>

Exactly. And I’m still fat and I mean significantly fat, not just 10 or 15 lbs.
