My daughter wants to be a biochemist. She has received full scholarships to Binghamton, stony brook ( WISE ), John Jay, Lehman
Baruch, Queens college, NYU Tandon school of Engineering ( polytech). I need help in choosing the right college.
It’s time to visit the campuses, if your daughter hasn’t.
Stonybrook is very strong in the sciences.
Your child received a full scholarship to NYU? In my time on this board I don’t think I’ve ever heard that this is even possible. Congratulations to your child on the choices.
You can split some of those off of your list by asking what type of residential environment your child wants, and then the immediate local environment.
Are they even peer institutions?
We are visiting the colleges on weekends. She also got accepted to BU but we have to pay $ 16,000. After scolorship
S
What is the net price on all?
Thank you
What do you mean by peer institutions
If you are visiting during accepted student days, which I have to assume you are, your child should be able to get an idea of what feels right about a campus, but should already have an idea of whether the school is strong in her projected field of study, what the opportunities for getting into the classes as a freshman and sophomore are (will she have to wait until the upperclassmen have registered), what the opportunities for working with a professor on a research project are, and, if your student has interests outside of the projected major, are there opportunities for study in those areas should she change her mind.
I will send you a PM with a list of things that another parent posted which I have found helpful. They may act as a framework for you as you and your daughter visit the schools.
To find the PM (private message), scroll up to the top of the page and look for a number which lights up over one of the images in the upper right portion of the page.
NYU is $65,500. BU is $ 65,110. The others are about $ 25,000 or lower
By peer institutions I mean are the schools considered to deliver the same quality of education and educational experience to the students, when one considers how the schools are ranked. So, are they “neighbors” when it comes to what they offer in the classroom, and in the value of the degree after the student graduates?
What are the outcomes, in terms of completion of the undergraduate coursework and graduation rates? How successful are the students at going on to higher levels of education, and how well are they received by the graduate institutions to which they apply?
I have sent you a PM, you can check for it now.
I have received the check list and already printed it out. I will look into the peer institution part. Thank you
Perhaps checking into the majors offered at each would help. NYU’s engineering division just has engineering, so one would have to transfer to the division that offers the desired major if it is not engineering. John Jay has a cell and molecular biology major, but it appears that the main emphasis is forensics.
