Choosing a new epic, help out!

Well, I’ve got a certain affinity for the classics that’s beginning to manifest. I do plan to eventually go onto the lesser known epics (the cid, song of roland, etc), but I would like to tackle a few more large epics/ epic style poetry books.

So far I’ve got down:
The Iliad
The Odyssey
The Aeneid
Gilgamesh
The Inferno (Dante)

And some other smaller ones. I’m thinking of after I finish the last few pages of the Aeneid (which has become my FAVORITE epic even above the iliad which I didn’t think would happen), I’m thinking about finishing Purgatorio and Paradiso (dante), then probably heading to Milton for Paradise Lost/Paradise found. I also want to look into the Voyage of the Argo but I feel like I’m missing some.

I’ve also looked at the Homeric Hymns which I plan to finish.

My question is, what other works on such a grand scale with such incredible literary prowess can I find from the classics and classic authors such as Virgil, Homer, Dante Aligheri, Milton, etc. I want all the good epics, I really do plan to read at least 30 this year, if not alot more.

I guess you could include old greco/roman plays as long as they are more on the “geared for warrior” type of audience that epics are.

You missed Beowulf (soon to be a movie). In 2000, it was re-translated by the poet Seamus Heaney.

I’ve read Beowulf, thought I mentioned it. I think everyone has lol.

Tommy. HAH!

Ulysses by James Joyce

Ovid’s Metamorphoses, and some of that King Arthur stuff.

Yay! Classics!

I loooooooved the Aeneid.

Arthurian Literature: The Once and Future King, Mort de’Arthur, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

The Faerie Queene by Edmund Spenser (it’s a tough read, but if you get an annotated version it’s not that bad.)

Les Miserables, unabridged and in French if you know it.
Victor Hugo is classic.

Ulysses by James Joyce = greatest book ever written…fo reals though…

Les Miserables isn’t an epic, though. However, it’s an awesome book. I read it a couple of years ago. The original French version is much ebtter than any translation.

Paradise Lost
