choosing a school

Here are the facts: I’m a Montana resident, and I have 39 vcompleted quarter credits from an Oregon Community College.

I don’t like Montana that much…I was going to finish my AA in oregon and work for a year (in order to get residency), and go to the University of Oregon… majoring in Chinese and minoring in religious studies (I want to then get a masters in Buddhist thought in Thailand… and maybe get a doctorate in Japan or China).

You might be thinking: why study Chinese if I plan to go to Thailand. Well, since I’ll be studying Buddhism, and my interest is Zen Buddhism… all of the scriptures for that are in Chinese… I also want to study Japanese, pali, and maybe Tibetan BTW

But then I started thinking: I could just transfer to the University of Montana and get my BA in like 2 1/2 years. I already have residency, and the tuition in montana is like $2500 per year (the in-state tuition in the University of Oregon is $6000)

But is it a no-brainer? The university in Thailand is not selective at all btw…

However, the U of Montana doesn’t have the programs I want… They have maybe a tiny Chinese program and no religious studies.

But the U of Or chinese program is very comprehensive…

Sounds like you should go to Oregon; a stronger academic program would open more doors for you.

Thanks for thje input; yes, I’m also thinking that. Besides, I guess hanging about working full time for maybe 18 months so I can get enough tuition money and residency, Isn’t so bad. There might be an advantage, because I can do independant study during that time to prepare. I’m sure I’ll have no money after my BA, so I plan to enter the peace corps for 27 months… or teach English in Thailand.

OOps, I’m having second thoughts.

I can finish a BA at the U of M much faster, and never have to worry about money. I’m already 26… I spent 2 years studying in the Philippines, and I left witout a degree… I started going to college in 2005]. I don’t want to spent 7 years getting a 4 year degree.

If I choose Or, I will be on a budget continually. (I’m not lucky, my family has never supported me financially… actually they borrow money from me)

It seems going with the U of M won’t impact my long term goals… any foreign college will accrept me.

I just emailed the U or O, asking how likely it is that I can get financial aid to cover all of my tuition (I have 10 months left of Montgomery GI bill benefits, and finishing my AA in Oregon will deplete that… but the U of M is so cheap, I’ll have money left over after getting a BA.

I change my mind often; I searched the U of M’m site for VA… no results! Imagine, a university with no information on veterans benefits?

I judge universities by their websites… some are disorganized, or they are missing information. Bad.

I want to serve in Tibet in the peace corps… well Tibet isn’t going away in 4 years… so I guess I can do the long haul. Plus, I alredy have close to 80 credits (counting my Philippine transcript.
