Daughter will be attending CYM this summer. I have e-mailed the school but wondered if anyone knew the following:

On the registration form, it says to pick an elective. When we did this about a month ago, my daughter was sad to see that the Alexander Technique class was filled. I have heard others students are interested in this class as well, any chance they’d open a second section if enough students requested it?

The other two choices she considered were either Conducting or Rhythm Class. She ended up going with Rhythm class thinking at this point (HS sophomore) it would be the most beneficial.

Does this sound like a good choice? Would Rhythm Class be the best of the three even if Alexander Technique was open? I certainly appreciate opinions as we are so new to this.

Also, when we signed up, it just asked for instrument. Now it lists Oboe Masterclass under electives. Aren’t Master Classes included and not electives? And what about Private lessons? My computer will not let me open the brochure on the website which may explain, just wondering if anyone knew. Thanks!

I’d recommend contacting the CYM staff and ask your questions. As far as the master class, it could be that signing up for it means that your daughter would be playing for the class instead of observing. If there any classes in music theory/sightsinging as electives, they would be helpful during the audition process especially if she is interested in music ed. At many summer camps, private lessons are optional and are an extra cost.

Thanks Momofbassist. I will call. When I signed her up several weeks ago, the webpage said private lessons were included. You needed to check what instrument you played and pick an elective. Now, no lessons are mentioned and on the pick your class page, there are the electives that were there before and now below that is listed Oboe Masterclass, Violin Masterclass, etc. Daughter will be taking Music Theory in HS in the fall so she didn’t choose Music Theory as her elective. She won’t be auditioning for another year so we thought that was ok. Of the choices I mentioned (Alexander technique, Rhythm Class and Conducting) which would you recommend? Can you explain what the Alexander Technique is? it filled up fast and daughter was interested in it.

Do they have piano as an elective? Music ed majors at Crane take 4 semesters of keyboard (most other music ed schools have at least 2 semesters) so if she hasn’t taken piano it would be worth a try. As far as the Alexander technique, it is a very popular class even at the college level and difficult to get into.At the college level it counts towards a gym credit and upper level music course for general ed and music distribution requirements. It deals with muscle and mental relaxation to help prevent injuries from repetitive stress injuries common for instrumentalists, etc. As far as Rhythm, I am not familiar with it.

No, they don’t offer Piano. I did just get on the website and found that they do offer free private lessons and that all students attend Master Classes. I think that the way they had it listed the Masterclass section was to tell you how many spots for your instrument were still available, in other words the Oboe Master class has 5 spots left, so they will accept 5 more oboes into the summer program.
