Choosing between internships

To give you some background of myself, I am business major (class of 2012) at the Univeristy of Michigan and I am also doing pre-health with intent to going to med school after graduation. Currently, I am deciding between two internships over the summer: One is at the NCIRE (medical research institution) in San Francsico, which I will be performing lab work. The next is a Business Internship at Amgen in Seattle.

As much as I’d like to, I cannot do both. While the Amgen internship will pay significantly more and the company will also cover my living expenses and travel, it is also important that pre-med students attain some lab experience before med school…right? However as of now, I do not have any work experience in the lab.

My question is, will med schools admissions look at this business internship neutrally, even if it’s at a leading biotech company? How about compared to the lab internship in SF?

Thanks!

Personally, I’d choose the business internship. You’ll still have plenty of time and opportunities for clinical and lab experience; the same is probably not true for the Amgen internship.

GS is right – if you can find other chances to do clinical/lab work, then Amgen is probably a fine choice.
