Choosing between UCLA [$40k] & Pepperdine [$34k] for CA resident for pre-med

The student is short only almost $5000 of tuition. The rest is covered.

Add that to the $25,000 for room/board and fees, and you have less than $34,000.

But if you add in travel, health insurance, personal expenses, it could come close to $34,000 a year at Pepperdine.

Actually Pepperdine lists tuition at 69k for next year. So indeed 34k out of pocket.

I’m sure the OP can clarify, but the implication here is that cost between UCLA and Pepperdine is not a factor.

@med_lover are you OK with the religious factor at Pepperdine. Very specific religion courses that must be taken. IIRC, there are some other rules that are very conservative. When we visited, we felt Pepperdine had a beautiful campus and an even better view. But we thought the student body was very homogenous. Also, Malibu doesn’t really have a lot going on…

UCLA is larger for sure. It’s located in a major metro area. Lots of diversity in terms of everything at this school. Religion isn’t a factor at all.

You have to choose the school you think will be best for you.

Again…I suggest you take premed out of the equation…and choose an undergrad where you think you will thrive

Yes, cost isn’t an issue.

I am Christian, so the religious factor doesn’t bother me.

5-year old article, but Pepperdine’s location is considered isolated, if that makes a difference for you.

Yes, that makes a pretty big difference, especially if its isolation means that I have less access to ECs that enhance an application for medical school. I also don’t have a car.

You’re Christian but are you Church of Christ? It’s a different animal. I know, I was raised in it.

My daughter is in the same situation with full tuition waived off from Pepperdine, MCDB major at UCLA and a church of christ member. He desire is to go to med school and she has the exact same concerns as you do. Its a difficult decision to make and she is still contemplating. We told her to list both Pros and Cons for both universities (towards reaching her goal) and rank those in priority. Hopefully that helps. Also, you get lot of good information from amazing people here. Both are good schools and you can’t go wrong with those. Pray about it and you will make a wise call. Hope it helps.

May I ask how your son/daughter got so much assistance from Pepperdine. we just received financial aid package today for her to start as an incoming freshman next year and she got zero financial aid and only 8k in merit. She has 3.9 u/w gpa and over 4.0 in weighted. We are church of christ as well. so confused over here. literally every other school gave us full aid when Pepperdine gave us zero.

There may have been a mistake - review CSS/FAFSA line by line in case an extra zero found its way somewhere.
