Choosing between UIUC CS Honors, UCLA, and Georgia Tech Computer Engineering

I’ve been accepted into the Computer Science program at UIUC with honors and UCLA, and I’ve also been admitted to Georgia Tech for a Bachelor’s in Computer Engineering as an international student. I’m feeling a bit torn between choosing UIUC and Georgia Tech. I have a few questions in mind: which program is better, what are the research opportunities, and what about internships and job placement after completion? Georgia Tech has a slight edge in terms of ranking and reputation. Does that really matter?

Do you want to do computer science or computer engineering? They are different majors.

You can get an internship from either. Getting a job after your OPT period requires a sponsoring employer. That’s not easy and it depends on the state of the economy and applicable immigration laws at that time. As an international student you might quite likely need to return to your home country.

Both schools have a very strong reputation.

Is there a meaningful cost difference to you between the two? Do you want to be in a city? Is weather an important factor for you?

I would say UIUC has an edge over GTech for CS specifically- and since you got honors there and will get more personal advising&opportunities that’s what Id pick if both are equally affordable.

Exactly. And no ability anymore to transfer into CS at Tech.

I would choose UIUC if CS is the preferred major.

Depending on the curriculum you could generally make your CompE degree as much of a CS degree as you want. So, I wouldn’t worry about CS vs. CompE per se unless GT makes it hard for CompE majors to enroll in CS classes. To me, this is a pure toss-up and I would decide based on cost, location, weather etc. These are two equally great schools.

I do not know abour CS vs CE, but Gatech often limits during first phase registration to majors. There was a huge problem even for CS minor to get required classes. That is why now restrictions.

UIUC for CS especially if Honors. It’s one of the best in the country.
