In response to your blog on a member of the WWE/survior… You mention that the individual sunys have been promoting a movement away from the “SUNY” label and towards a more distinguished “University of” or “stony brook university…” I was just wondering, are there any plans to officially change the name of suny schools to such titles? Because it seems a little silly to advocate different names for your school just because it sounds better.

Silly? Hardly. It’s all about marketing. Colleges and universities are businesses like any other in a lot of respects. Nationally, the term “SUNY Anything” is clumsy; it doesn’t roll off the tongue like Penn State or UCLA.

I don’t know about “officially,” because we’ll likely all always be part of the state university system (and don’t believe anything you read that says otherwise), so we’ll always officially have the SUNY affiliation. But the “State University of New York” text seems to be marginalized or eliminated in logos and things, just for simplicity’s sake.
