Chris Hanson, Dateline NBC; the irony of hidden video cameras.

So 2 weeks ago Chris Hanson was on our local NBC News affiliate being interviewed about a Dateline piece on an unsolved murder in the area from years ago. I though it was curious he was there. Did they need a ratings boost? No, turns out he was having an affair with a local reporter, from said affiliate, 20+ years his junior. He was videotaped during that trip and a few others. He was seen wining and dining and romancing the woman, he was taped entering with his hotel and/or her apartment in the evening and leaving together the following morning. The irony of this is not lost. His To Catch a Predator pieces for Dateline are his claim to fame.

Certainly he was not braking any laws, and no, he was not acting as a predator. But geez, he IS married and fairly recognisable.

He who lives by the sword dies by the sword? People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones?

Welcome to the world of media. It’s full of hypocrisy. It’s a sad fact, but he’ll get his just desserts in due time. I imagine it’ll end like this for Chris Handsome.

Too bad SNL is on summer hiatus…so much material for the fall…

Not that SNL has EVER made good use of all the good material out there.

Maybe he should have been a politician.

Why am I not surprised?

You know what really irks me about that show? The way they throw the term “pedophile” around. Yeah, a guy going after a 14-year-old is illegal and immoral, but pedophilia is a whole different animal. Minor detail in the grand scheme of things, I know, but it irritates me because they’re only saying it to get a cheap reaction from the viewing audience. It’s sort of like calling a house fire a “horrific inferno” to hook people into tuning in to the local news.

I agree - TCAP was a sleazy show and I have as little sympathy for its host as I have for its predators.

karma…

Who was taping him?

Too bad to read this… I know his wife & kids. I always hated that show, and i always felt the tapes were just set-ups. Why would anyone do those things? but maybe that’s just me.

A lot of the guys they catch are so pathetic. I can’t believe some 40-year-old slob would show up in sweats, unshaven, hair uncombed, and expect some high school girl to fall all over him. It makes me wonder if they’re not so much predators as mentally ill.

But then, plenty of them really are predators, or at least don’t think the law applies to them. And do any of them believe that the line, “I was just going to talk to her,” or, “I would going to counsel her about how she’s too young to be meeting men online,” is the slightest bit believable.

So I guess I’m saying I hate the show, but it’s a fascinating freak show nevertheless.

Check out the Perverted Justice website. That’s the volunteer group To Catch a Predator works with. They have rules provided by law enforcement to make sure that they’re not entrapping anyone. The “youngsters” never initiate contact online, never talk dirty, never suggest meeting, etc. They just log in and wait for someone to contact them, start talking about sex, and basically invite himself over. The guys are screwing themselves from beginning to end.

It was certainly wrong, but hypocrisy? His allegations on TV were never “Sex is wrong” or “Cheating is wrong” but rather “Raping children is wrong.” If he didn’t do that, it’s merely very wrong, not hypocritical.

We don’t know that he;s cheating - it could be an open marriage. We know nothing about him, and it’s none of our business.

I agree with mini. Hell, the only reason I posted was because this was a perfect opportunity to use that clip.
