I ordered the coolest gift, but should send a message to the person who made it to warn her before I post !! She might get flooded with orders.
50kg is 110 lbs.
90kg is 198 lbs.
I’m just kidding about the fat part. Some people can eat lots of candies and don’t get fat.
That’s a terrible story, mcat! The guy was that insecure? Wow. Just wow. He didn’t force her to eat but she didn’t want to turn down his “gifts” and appreciated his attention? Hope she turned down his proposal!
If you told us something about them and gave us a sense of your budget, we could give better advice.
My daughter and her friends like these backpacks:

They seem popular with the college-aged set; not sure if they are popular with a slightly older crowd.
I would be seriously concerned if anyone I knew went from 100 pounds to nearly doubling their weight. I’m sure there must be much more involved and if it was someone I knew, I’d want to do something. That sounds VERY unhealthy! IF she plans to have kids, she may gain some additional weight – some that she may keep permanently.
If I was dating someone and their parents gave me a gift of an event for 2 included dinner, it’s really a gift for the couple and not for me specifically. It’s nice, but especially if it’s something HE wants to see is more of a gift for HIM, not me.
@jym626 I don’t like to give gift cards either. It feels like a cop out. Exceptions are B&N cards for the nook owners in my life, and Fandango cards, which are kind of a go-to when nothing else comes to mind. People seem to really like them.
How would you know the person is in town / not otherwise engaged at the time of the show?
Gift cards, well-chosen, can be a big hit, even when the giver isn’t thrilled with the idea. I love books so a B & N or Amazon GC is always appreciated. This winter I plan to ask for GC, if someone isn’t sure what to get me, to my favorite clothing stores or to 6pm.com because I’m losing weight and none of my shoes and many of my clothes are too big! I can’t afford to completely re-buy a whole wardrobe while I’m losing. DD wants GC to Michael’s because she’s recently started scrapbooking. People like the GC because they might not spend their own money on things for themselves, so a GC allows them guilt-free treats.
Oh I know that a lot of people really appreciate getting gift cards, and I do give them. It just feels like I’m taking the easy way out. Like if I really cared about the person, I would know what to get them.
Then there are the many folks who let gift cards expire and neither the giver nor the recipient gets the benefit of the gift. My folks have so many gift cards it is truly a burden to keep track of them and mostly they let them sit and gather dust! My D has let many gift cards expire as well. I know they can be sold online and you get some portion of the value that was paid for them, but it pains me to see them expire.
I agree, gift cards seem impersonal, but when you know something specific about the recipient, even the gift card gift can be personalized somewhat. For our SIL, a gift card from REI is an awesome present. He is an avid surfer - I have no idea what surfers buy, but he always goes shopping and buys something right away. Big kiddo asks for gift cards to certain places, too, because she can use her academic discount to buy things she needs/wants/whatever.
Speaking of bags… Neither kid likes to carry logos, so Longchamp totes are welcome here. The kid who studied French this fall will be getting a Miaou tote. The other kid will be getting a tote in her school color (go Dawgs!).
But sometimes if you know the person, you know that gift cards are the absolute best thing you can give them.
As a professional student, Amazon gift cards are far and away my favorite gift ever.
Best gift I ever gave my son…a new wallet…with six or seven gift cards in it. I knew the places where he would use them…Target, Express, Trader Joes, Amazon, etc. he was thrilled. Now this would be a bit too pricey for a gift for a GF, but it was great for my kid.
I don’t love gift cards but many young people are short on cash and really appreciate them- Amazon and Barnes and Noble are good. Some of my kids love Home Depot cards but only those who own houses. I have done my own gift basket crammed with Trader Joes goodies- they always have a lot of great fun stuff over the holidays. One DD loves scarves but is very picky- she will not wear infinity scarves. The other hates them. I hate anything scented but my DD’s like specific scents. I always stay away from that kind of stuff. A gift card to a nail salon if you can find out if they use a specific one? Cute serving dishes or handmade pottery? World Market has really cute kitchen towels and kitchen gadgets. My sons are useless when it comes to suggestions for GF’s- DD’s usually help me.
Hobbies? I know I love getting skeins of cashmere knitting yarn (I make hats for people and I love knitting with cashmere). Usually people enjoy talking about their hobbies, which makes it easy to find something they enjoy as a gift.
i think my DD might like a years subscription to the car wash.
Re salons…what about a gift card to a full service place…you know…hair, manicures, pedicures, etc…I mean everyone needs to get their hair cut at some point.
The other thing to be cautious of in general regarding gift cards to spas, etc is that those things necessitate tipping which are generally not included on cards. These women seem to be a bit older and maybe in a place where that wouldn’t be an issue, but it can be a bit awkward to get a gift that you have to pay for in order to use.
If you do go the hair, nail, etc route I’d get a gift card to a place they already use rather than a random one.
Something unique and beautiful. Maybe a light cashmere, pashmina, or embroidered shawl. They are so lightweight and warm. Personally I collect them in different colors and prints. The designs are gorgeous. The link below will give you an idea. Indian shops have beautiful jewelry. Bangles and bracelets in beautiful colors with mirrors and stones.

I love this one. Looks like a full length shawl.
