Chromebook practical at Tech?

Hello all,

I am entering Tech for Aerospace Engineering this fall as a freshman and I wanna know what are some of the caveats with buying a chromebook and use it around the campus. From what I’ve read, most engineering applications like CAD and Matlab are ran through virtual machines and Citrix has a client/“app” for Chromebooks. My concern is that its operating principle of cloud computing, it will use a lot of internet resources. Assuming there’s wireless coverage for all the academic buildings, is there a limit on internet usage? And what are some other reasons which I should/should not get one?

PS. I am also bringing my laptop (which is more of a desktop replacement) which is more than enough to run a lot of the applications (Core i7 2nd gen processor, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, 1 TB HDD). But it’s fairly heavy and the battery life is a joke (most of the time an hour and 15 mins, close to 2 hours on a really really good day). Carrying it around isn’t as big as a concern as it running out of juice…

No limit on internet. The internet is great; we all love it. Download all you want (just don’t get caught).

As for a Chromebook, I wouldn’t bother. Unless you really like those things, I wouldn’t shell out the money for one. Just get a regular laptop if that one is on its last leg. As for having your laptop around campus, I used to carry mine around the first semester of my freshman year but I haven’t bothered since. It is just much easier to actually pay attention in class and use the library computers (very centrally located), whenever I need a pc. That’s just my two cents though.
