Someone D just met took her and her roommate to “jump off a rock into a lake”… While they were there, a cop arrived, accused them of trespassing, got full names and address, and threatened to write up an official warning which would be sent to the college. Apparently there were several other people there, too.

My D had no idea she was trespassing, barely knew the guy who took them, and has no idea what any of this means… Her new friend (not a student at UNC) said not to worry, this had happened to him several times and nothing came of it.

Can anyone enlighten us? Should we be worried? What/where is this place?

I doubt anything will come of it. I wonder what lake it is? I doubt the lake is private; probably the section where they were (the jumping off spot) is on private land, and people probably go there all the time to jump into the lake. Were there no “no trespassing signs?”

The person who owns the land is probably terrified somebody’s gonna get hurt one day and ultimately sue him/her (especially right now-- since we’re currently in a drought), and has probably asked local cops to try to warn people off. I’m sure that’s all it is-- a warning. I don’t think you need to be concerned, though I’d probably stay away and find an alternative to jumping into the lake. ;)

This wasn’t the quarry in Eno River park was it? A student died there this summer and I heard they are trying to keep people out of it. I think that “lake” is in Durham? not sure though.

The guy who died was a friend of my D’s from Chapel Hill and a great great guy. He had grown up going there and to this day no one really knows what happened to cause him to go under…it was and is very sad. She said people like that don’t come around often and he will surely be missed by many.

hmmm…many lakes in that area are old quarrys. There is an old quarry lake on Sugar Lake Road in Pittsboro…not sure if that is the lake in question though.

I’ve told my d…good rule of thumb - just stay out any and all quarry lakes. Some may think they are great fun (a la ‘Breaking Away’), but I tend to agree with the article describing them as treacherous for swimming.
