Citi Double Cash Card--anyone?

We are in the market for an additional credit card.
Wondering if anyone here has this card?
Do you like it? Any problems?
Thanks!

I have had it for two years, never had a problem. I have not claimed my points yet, lol.

Thanks^
H had read some bad reviews but then I really good reviews so thought to ask here.
When you say points do you mean the 2% cash back?

I don’t have any experience with this card, but was thinking of recommending it to my new college grad. Wondering why you have not redeemed, is it hard to get the cash back?

Kids have their credit cards through Fidelity where they have zero fee accounts, including no ATM charges anywhere. The credit card has no annual fee and pays 2% back on everything. Worth a look.

You can redeem the cash back any time. I am just too lazy to redeem it.

Too lazy to get money? :open_mouth:

Definitely a good card. I use AmEx Blue or Chase Freedom on rotating basis for their quarterly bonus points and Citi Double Cash for EVERYTHING else. Got almost $1000 back in 2016 and cash it in for Dec bill which is typically largest of the year.
highly recommend

What would be the best card then if you pay off every month and spend a decent amount? We’ve only had a citicard for over 30 years. It doesn’t have any perks to speak of. Their service is great. I think we are missing out of rewards that other cards may offer.

Thanks so much! We have delaying this decision and have been just staying with the what we know.

We have had Capital One for 10 years and, as we charge everything and pay as we go,
meaning I review and pay the balance 2-3 times a month using it like a checking account.
It keeps me honest.

We have never paid any fees. There is no foreign transaction fee. Their security team and customer
service is great. But they pay back 1.25% vs 2% for Citi Double Cash. Which when I do the math
we are losing bunches. There is a foreign transaction fee for Citi but we will keep the Capital One
for overseas (the big items such as air will have been paid before travel on the Citi).

My H was pleased that I was posting here as he read that they have poor customer service on
one site. I found positives and Clark Howard likes them. The key is that you pay the balance
on time.

Years ago we liked our Juniper card that gave air miles on any airline. I know D and FSIL
have applied for an Alaska card. We are not airline or hotel loyal. And I just like the cash–which we
take as a credit on the balance.

We have USAA unlimited visa and get 2.5% cash back on everything. We like that best. You do have to have direct deposit if at least $1000/month but that’s the only catch. We do an automatic transfer of $1000 from another bank into our USAA checking account. It also provides some extras like 90 day buyer protection, extended warranty, etc. it is our main CC. It is a true pin and chip and if I recall has no foreign transaction fee.

For airplane tickets, we use United explorer to get free luggage.

For hotel and car rental we usually use Chase Sapphire visa and earn free Ultimate Reward points that can be redeemed at any airline or hotel. We generally give the points to D.

We used to use Chase Spark business visa to get 2% cash back on everything but like 2.5% on USAA better.

Before I go overseas, I will call to doublecheck which have foreign transaction fees and in what amount, since terms DO change.

@iglooo For someone who pays off balances and spends a lot, look for a card with no annual fees and a larger payout, like the Fidelity card I mentioned earlier. There is no cap on cash back.

Yes, the USAA card has no annual fees and no caps on rebates.

Here is my 2 cents.

Never worry about paying a fee for a credit card. First, calculate the yearly cash back to see if the cash back warrants the fee.

Here is our strategy.

We use Amex Blue Cash Preferred($75 fee) for Grocery and Gas. Grocery is 6% cash back. Gas is 3% cash back. The free no fee version of the same card gives 3% cash back on groceries and 2$ cash back on gas. Extra $75 fee brings us around $400 in cash back versus the free version. So it is a no brainer. We paid $75 fee to gain a $400 extra cash back.

We use Chase Sapphire Reserve for Travel and Restaurants. Annual fee is $450 but when we signed up, my wife and I each got $1000 sign up bonus after spending the required amount. We then combined our points and redeemed it at 1.5 on travel. This gave us a total of $3000 bonus since we used our points on travel at 1.5 times rule. We get 3% cash back on Travel and Restaurants. The thing that makes this card awesome for us is the annual $300 travel credit. Since we signed up, my wife and I got $300 credit in 2016 and in 2017 already. After using annual $300 credit, the total annual cost of card is $150. And since this card has No foreign transaction fees and since we are from Europe, we are able to use this card extensively when we go back to Europe every summer. Wife and kids stay in Europe for 2 months every year so this card comes in handy. Also this card gives free lounge access in many US and World airports. I used the lounges many times. Okay the lounges aren’t as fancy as the Business Class Lounge of say Emirates or Qatar Airways, it is still a nice place to relax before your flight. We love love love Chase Sapphire reserve for extra luxury that pays itself many times.

For everything else, we use Citi Double Cash card. As long as you don’t carry a balance on your card, this card is a no brainer. This card also allows us generate Virtual single use Credit Card numbers for online shopping. This is what we use on all of our online shopping.

So in summary this is what we do.

Amex Blue Cash Preferred($75 fee) for Grocery(6% cash back) and Gas(3%)
Chase Sapphire (net $150 fee after annual $300 credit) for Travel(3%) and Restaurants(3%)
Citi Double Cash Card(no fee) for everything else (2%)

Above 3 are our only 3 cards. Annual net fee on all three comes to $225. In an average year, we get a total cash back of around $2000 by using these cards.

Let me know if you have any questions.

You can do what you have without a hefty fee.

There is a new Amex card will give you $500(300+200) signup bonus, if you charge $3000 first three mon and $2000 the next 3 month. It also has 5% rebate on Wireless Phone bill and 3% on one of the T/E categories. no fee and it is on the way. The old one has the 5% rebate on Wireless and I only use that for the phone bill.

Costco gives you 4% back on gas 3% on Restaurant. I have to have Costco membership so I don’t mind to pay for it.

The 2% Double cash card is used for everything else.

Anyone had better idea?

My wife is big on Southwest Airline card, big milage signup bonus and first year free. She normally cancel it after the first year.

I had a good deal with Citibank Thank You card sign on bonus, but the sign on bonus is no longer.

@oregon101 – I have not had any trouble with it at all. I have it set up to auto-pay the full balance on the due day (or perhaps a few days in advance). I disputed a duplicate charge once, and it was handled easily.

My only complaint is that they write to me regularly offering to increase my credit but they will not do so w/o running a credit check. Since I have a freeze on my credit and don’t feel like paying to lift the freeze, they can’t ever increase my credit. As you suggested, I have paid off part of the balance mid-month when running up against the limit.

If you do have a freeze on your credit, Citi is the one issuer who will not tell you in advance which of the three agencies they use, so you need to lift the freeze with all three, which costs $12/agency in CT. (Free in some states.)

There may have been some sort of sign-up bonus when I first got the card but I cannot recall now. It was not something amazing.

@ArdenNJ

It pays an extra 3% on groceries and an extra 1% on gas, correct?

If that extra $400 was all from groceries, that would mean you are spending $13,000+ per year on groceries. If it was split 50/50, you’d be spending $6600 on groceries and $20,000 on gas.

Are you really spending at these levels for groceries and gas? Wow.

I use my Fidelity 2% cash back card for almost everything except Amazon, where I use the Amazon visa (5% back if you have Prime). To me it’s like couponing, yeah you can save a few dollars but I just don’t the patience to keep track of which has to used where on what.

You have to be charging on average $5,000+ per month to get cash back at this level. Our spending does not come anywhere close to this.

Wow, CT1417–yes we have a credit freeze on all three and have only lifted one. Just busy work and 2 $10 bills.
But that is annoying.
No sign up bonus now, anyway.
Good idea to have auto pay–makes sense.

art, I think you are making the most one can make for a pay back.
H and I would never be willing to carry a lot of cards and would never keep track of
what card to use when.

Right now I only carry two credit cards, the Costco card and the double cash card. When the new Amex card comes, I’d be careful to charge just enough to get the bonus, then lay it down. I think I will choose Airfare for that 3% rebate.

@notrichenough

Our grocery expense is around 12000 a year. We don’t eat outside much and we don’t use Costco or any other options. We shop at Stop and Shop and Shoprite for a family of 4 and sometimes more depending on how many guests visits us from our home country.

Both my wife and I live far from our offices. Our work places are at opposite ends.We also like to drive to north our south on long weekends. So our yearly gas expense is around $4000.

12000 for groceries at 3% makes $360
4000 for gas at 1% makes 40.

Hence the $400 total.
