Civil Engineering AND Business

Berkeley has been my top choice college for some time now. I read an article today in USC’s Viterbi magazine about a man named Sony Astani who majored in civil engineering and has become one of the biggest real estate devolopers in Los Angeles. Real estate development is the field that interests me most, and I have been inspired to pursue a degree in business. Upon reading this article however, I am figuring that civil engineering and real estate development (large commercial projects) go hand in hand. I am interested in pursuing a double major in business and CEE. Does this seem like too much to handle? I know that Berk has the best civil engineering program now in the nation, and i figure it would kick my butt, but is it manageable? Any suggestions on a general path to follow for real estate development?

It would require more effort than an average student, but if you’re committed, double majoring in CE and Business is certainly possible. Civil engineering is known to be fairly rigerous, and there is not a significant overlap between the two disciplines. I would recommend that you make the choice once you get accepted to Haas, and take some of the CE prereqs, which are often challenging.

Yeah i have read that some of the lower level engineering classes are weeders. Are you suggesting that I take those prereqs before or after i am accepted Haas (as in, during my first two years)? Or do you mean take those once i begin my business major through Haas? Does CEE and Haas even seem to be a good combination for what i am interested in?

I am reading online that a new four-year curriclum will be used starting next year for Civil engineering majors. Does this mean that i would need to apply for that before matriculating after high school, or would i still apply for the engineering school for my junior year?
