Hi,

I’m thinking of suscribing to a civil engineering magazine as a gift for a friend. I’m located in Canada. Does anyone have any recommendations? Hes especially interested in structural engineering.

thanks

Most civil engineering magazines (particularly structural) are received as a result of membership in a particular organization.

I’m a member of AISC (Amer. Inst. of Steel Construction) and I particularly like “Modern Steel Construction”. It’s my favorite. They showcase some really cool projects every month, and I’m really fond of steel design anyhow.

I’m also a member of ASCE (Amer. Soc. of Civ. Engs.) and they publish “Civil Engineering”.

Zweig White also publishes “CE News” ([Welcome to CENews.com - For the Business of Civil Engineering](http://www.cenews.com)) and “Structural Engineer” (www.gostructural.com). They have some pretty good salary surveys every year, and they publish a list of the best firms to work for every year, too.

There’s also “Structure” which is decently good (www.STRUCTUREmag.org).

I also get “Spectra”, but that’s more of an academic journal from my EERI (Earthq. Eng. Research Inst.) membership. It’s pretty cool, but others might not find it as interesting as I do.

If I’m not mistaken, Modern Steel Construction is free to U.S. residents, regardless of AISC membership. It’s available for a free for non U.S. residents (including Canada).

[Modern Steel Construction » Subscriptions](http://www.modernsteel.com/subscriptions.php)

Hunh! Cool. I always just got it automagically because of my AISC membership; never knew you could just ask for it.

It really is a great magazine. I like the steel quizzes.

I… am admittedly lame.

(I seriously considered getting married in a church I saw an article on in MSC, the main draw being that there was an article on it in MSC. It was also just a very lovely cathedral.)

Typo… it’s available for a FEE, not free, for non-U.S. residents.

I definately want to get something engineering related for his birthday. What do you think about be better? 1year subscription to Modern Steel construction or a framed picture of a bridge.

thanks!

Considering the fact that MSC is free and that you were presumably planning on buying him something in the first place, you can probably do both…

Also check out [Gifts for Engineers, Unique gifts for every engineer on your list](http://www.giftsforengineers.com). A friend once bought me some blueprints-themed civil engineering stuff from there and it was a lot of fun.
