I am about to graduate B.S with a 3.15 GPA from a reputable school. I did a short summer internship on the construction field and a year-long internship with a major Oil&Gas company (as in-house structural engineer since they maintain a large fleet of in-house staff).

I was wondering if this gpa is going to put me at significant disadvantage since I am primarily looking for positions in major EPC companies. Also, I didn’t do much real design since I am on the owners side.

3.15 isn’t particularly low, it’s just not high. However, in this economy there are people with higher GPAs struggling to get jobs. You seem to have good internship experience, so I would imagine that to be what you should try and focus on in interviews.

Don’t be so quick to limit yourself to EPC’s; there’s only a handful of them out there. If I were you, I’d strongly consider staying with one of the two previous firms you worked for, if things are looking bleak for you elsewhere. You can always apply for jobs elsewhere later on if you want to.

The thing is you learn more on the consulting side while getting paid less compared to working for the owner. It wouldn’t be much of a problem to stay in that OG company for a few years since they are expanding and growing for the next decade. My ideal plan would be working for EPC or a large consulting firm for a few years before returning to school for my Master.

I am quite keen on structural analysis and drawing review in the office. Not that good of an exam taker at school however.

Furthermore, shall I prepare my explanation for that GPA during the interview?

With a 3.15, I’d assume you make mostly Bs with a few As and a few Cs. If your Cs are in core Civil classes, then you might have some explaining to do. If your Cs are in calculus or something like that, then I would imagine it won’t be that big of an issue.
