S24 was planning to apply to CMC by December 1 for merit aid consideration, but he might end up switching his application to ED2 in January if he doesn’t get into his first choice ED, since it’s his second choice.
But we are wondering how unlikely it is for an unhooked applicant to get merit, and whether he should be prioritizing merit or just taking the best shot at acceptance.
Basically: Would it be better to either wait until January and apply ED2 straightaway, or alternatively, just leave his app as RD if he applies by Dec 1? Basically, would switching from RD to ED2 in January look bad and/or diminish any chances for merit? Is there much of an admission boost for ED2?

In a similar situation and would also like to hear other thoughts on this.

Hi! ED1 applicant here, and I had extensive discussions with admissions officers on this subject when I visited. The ED2 pool is super super small and you can’t really extrapolate anything from past pools, though the acceptance rate has always, as you’d imagine, been a fair deal higher than RD but lower than ED1. I don’t believe applying RD lowers your chances at receiving merit aid. However, I wouldn’t recommend ED’ing to any school where you’d have to really on merit aid, which you probably won’t get statistically, to attend.
