I am a korean student living in the philippines and got accepted to claremont mckenna and university of illinois - Urbana champaign. though for sure cmc is a much highly ranked school in terms of education and selectivity, i do not know if it will suit my needs.

i am a very interested only in business studies, which claremont mckenna does not seem to have. Everyone considers claremont’s small size to be a huge plus factor, but going in with a freshmen class of only perhaps 200 or so people would just be like high school all over again and i don’t know if that will broaden my horizons. also, claremont mckenna is notorious for its WASPyness (white, anglo-saxon, protestant) and though i am a practicing protestant, as well as very sociable, i dont think i’ll fit in.

overall, i want my college experience to be one of lots of fun as well as a recieve a good education, and i feel that claremont will provide me ONLY with the latter.

Please, please help me in making my decision about where i should go… almost every person i know is telling me to go to claremont… but i knwo that in my heart, i wanna be an illini… is claremont really that good that i should betray myself?

Student44, may I recommend you to spend some additional time reading online resources? I am afraid that your information is quite lacking in regard to the diversity situation and the availability of courses.

That said, you should not “betray” your heart and go with it!

For instance, UIUC diversity is:
88% In-state students
12% Out-of-state students
0% Part-time students
49% Women
51% Men
<1% American Indian/Alaskan Native
13% Asian/Pacific Islander
6% Black/Non-Hispanic
7% Hispanic
68% White/Non-Hispanic
4% Non-Resident Alien
2% Race/ethnicity unreported

and for CMC

Total enrollment (fall 2004) 1,066
Men 566, 53%
Women 500, 47%
Graduation rate 86%
Minority enrollment
Asian 160, 14.2%
African American 47, 4.2%
Latino 123, 10.9%
Native American 5, 0.4%
International students 34, 3.0%

Origin of students
46 states, Armed Forces Europe and Pacific, and District of Columbia; 21 countries

Off-campus study (2003/2004) 151
Study abroad 133
Washington, D.C. program 17
Intercollegiate exchange programs 1

Freshman admission profile (Class of 2008)
Number applied 3,528
Number entering 280
Median combined SAT I score 1400
Percent in top tenth of their high school classes 82.8%

Financial aid profile (2004-2005)
Receiving aid 67%
Average package $27,650
Range of awards $1000-$39,800

You didn’t mention the consortium. Although CMC is a small college in itself, it’s there with 4 other colleges. Alot of students who attend CMC end up having better friends at one of the neighbor colleges rather than at CMC. I do see what you’re saying in terms of the student body, but I am not WASP (neither white, Anglo-Saxon, or protestant haha), and I loved it when I visited. I attend a big high school with alot of diversity, but it didn’t feel that different when I visited CMC.

However, you shouldn’t listen to what other people recommend you do. If you really, really, REALLY want to go to UIUC, then go. If you’re sure that you want to go, then you probably won’t end up regretting it.

hey student44! for some reason i get the sense that you are a girl but maybe you are not. well i am and im korean too. i was stuck between ohio state and claremont mckenna…and i live in korea right now…going to an international school here. what decision did you end up making? i visited CMC and it is very waspy despite what everyone tries to tell you with the diversity stats. it’s just so…all-american? abercrombie-ish? but…people are down-to-earth and very cool. coming from a 100% korean school i wouldnt mind benig thrust into that environment…i need a reality check haha. well let me know how things went for you! i wish i could have talked to you earlier so we could have discussed pros and cons from a korean student’s point of view before the deposit deadline…anyways ciao!~

haha. im actually a guy. i go to the international school in manila. im guessing u go to S.I.S.? i used to know some people there. anyway, i ended up going to illinois. its so much better suited for me cuz of their business school, and plus they have a really good korean church there! hehe. i know i’ll have sooo much more fun in illinois, and my sister lives there too, so it’ll be cool to meet her. anyway, we shud have discussed this earlier!! u myt have convinced me to go to cmc in the end, cuz i was seroiusly having a huge dillema over this. anyway, i’m sure you’ll have fun in cmc regardless. good luck there!
