Clark Scholars 2010!

Some decisions were out, others were not.

I will definitely apply to the program again next year, finger acrossed.
Does Mr. San Francisco serve as a mentor to students too? If he is a really good mentor I will just try to bribe him to get placed in his lab lol.

^Dr. San Francisco is a mentor, too. Ask m.sides about his mentoring skills!

I’ve received no new info today… Oh well. Perhaps they don’t want to crush me in these two critical weeks.

^I wonder when we will find out?

^I honestly have no idea. Perhaps after all the APs are over?

Anyone turned Clark down so far?

I’m betting stronghammer did.

I haven’t received anything… fine…

what did stronghammer pick instead?

^TASP I believe.

A quick question: should I email Ms. Durham again?

Well, I got a PM from someone yesterday saying he got accepted, so they might be done with admissions. Always uncertain, though.

I hope you get in, happysunnyshine. :)

Is Dr. San Francisco the guy who makes all the selections?
Also there were like only 2 people at Clark who were Simens semi-finalist right? 2/12=17% I had this false impression that 50% of the kids at Clark made it through the semi-finalist round… Is there a huge difference between mentors?

Maybe I should wait for the rejection letter in my mail.
Ms. Durham said that I made into the final round (pick 12 out of 15). Apparently I am one of the 3 people who got cut.

^ I’m really sorry happysunnyshine! :'(

In all likelihood, I am the second of those 3 people who got cut.

yes, Dr. San Francisco is the ‘guy’ (a respected professor) who makes the selections, but I think he also takes the help of a selection committee.

bestswimmer, keep in mind that less that less than half of the clark scholars applied for siemens/intel. also, some of the scholars won in siemens and didn’t win in intel. for others it was flip-flopped. again, it’s what you make of it. the mentors are not the ones who are entering the competitions for you, nor are they solely responsible for winning you any, it is YOUR contribution and YOUR efforts in writing a decent paper.

sorry to hear that sunnyshine.

I’m sorry, happysunnyshine, I hope you get in! (There’s still hope until you actually have the rejection letter.)

Siemens: 9 or 10 eligible, 6 applied, 2 semifinalists
Intel: 10 eligible, 4 applied, 3 semifinalists

Which is a pretty good record.

Not a huge difference, but Dr. Carr’s kids always win awards.

And Torcher is right. For example, he got Siemens but not Intel; I got Intel but not Siemens. And since Clark Scholars is very independent, it makes sense that usually the ones who put the most effort in won (with a couple exceptions). Meaning that if you go to Clark Scholars and put lots of effort in from the very beginning, you have a very good shot at getting one of these.

It’s fine. I am not really that sad since I have so many other things to do to make my summer a productive one. I can self-study APs because some look so interesting!! I unfortunately didn’t know about APs until the beginning of my junior year (a big failure but yeah, our school only offers six and all of them are for seniors only; and trust me, they only cover less than 50% of the materials on the exams; Euro was barely 15%; I am ranting now), read (there are just so many books that I want to read… Voltaire & Rousseau & Plato etc; I did a pretty bad job in AP Euro History but I still love their work!!), volunteer, study for my darling SATs and start looking for a mentor for my project (want to try something new this year; last year my partner and I created beautiful green fountains using Arabidopsis and liquid nitrogen; that was one of the biggest artistic findings in the lab).
My teacher has actually contacted a paid internship for me in the local university so economically this alternative is better (it seems that I won’t be paid only the minimum wage). Besides I can sleep in my own bed. But I don’t know how it will turn out to be. He got really upset when I didn’t win first place in a competition and he didn’t talk to me at all for the following week (btw, he has fallen in love with the first-place winner; he was indeed really professional& knowledgeable). I hope my teacher’s mood fluctuation won’t jeopardize my chance. But as always, cross my fingers and hope for the best.
Thank you Torcher, proletariat2, HitMan, nirvanear (I apologize for messing up the spelling) and the seven other people (I believe it’s 8 now since proletariat2 has received a PM) who got in! It’s been a good time talking to you in this thread! Have fun in Lubbock and don’t forget, if possible, to share some photos of the cottontown with me!!!
