Do you remember how we were all complaining back after Christmas in '05 about the weird sleep habits that our children had developed in College? Well, last week I received a scolding from my daughter for calling her at 1130PM her time because she had to be at work at 900 the next morning. I realized later that this was one of those moments we had all been waiting for. I thought there might be other moments like this and that these might provide hope for all of those parents just sending there kids off to college for the first time.

well my S is still in college, but I have called him at times and heard the phrase “I can’t talk now, I’m studying”. Well okay then!

this was the same kid in HS that could be online, on the phone, tv on, music playing and ‘studying’ at the same time!

hi mardad…yeah…my son basically tanked on his sleep freshmen year in 05…got mono, complicated recovery…took him till sophomore year to learn to sleep from 1am till 8am and to stay on track with three squares a day…
yeah…they are growing up. I visited my son to see him perform at his college, and noticed that his freshman hall buddies all also showed up…only now they don’t look like the other kids hauling in their luggage in 05…they look like grown men and women.
the biggest evidence we have that our son is grown up is that he now works out most of his problems and daily issues entirely with the support of his peers who frankly are pretty sharp and run their lives quite well.
so…for those of you who raised interesting, ethical, hardworking, goal orientied, fun loving people who attend my son’s college…I thank you.
as much as it is sad to move forward and away from figuring into my son’s daily life, it is very much exactly what we hoped for.
college peers are really the heart of the matter when you choose your college in my opinion…our children need their own mentors in their own age cohort to lean on and to grow up with in the post college decade as well…
