"Class of 2008: a snapshot"

From “Yale Today” magazine:

Julia Huang is from St. Louis, Missouri, but she frequently travels to the Zagros Mountains of Iran, where she lives with a tribe of nomadic pastoralists called the Qashqa’i. She has shared her experiences in a chapter of Nomadic societies in the Middle East and North Africa entitled “Nomads in Iran since the Revolution of 1978-1979.”

A native of Gates Mills, Ohio, Emily Appelbaum has a fairly unique profession - stilt-dancing. She makes her own costumes and is booked for parties, parades, and festivals. Involved in acting and dance, she has also participated in community theater - on stage acting and backstage doing technical work. Just for kicks, Emily rides and shows horses.

Two friends from Jericho, New York, have shared titles and awards and now share their college as incoming Yalies. Jeffrey Reitman and Sean Mehra were 2nd place national winners of the Siemens Westinghouse Science & Technology Competition 2003 for research to create an optimal nanocomposite space lubricant and to improve nanolithography to facilitate the miniaturization of computer circuits. Both were also selected as one of 20 students to be U.S. Ambassadors in the 3rd Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Youth Science Festival hosted in Beijing, China. And just for the record, these two inventors were also inducted into the 2004 National Gallery for America’s Young Inventors Hall of Fame.

Esther Hahn, a Manhattan Beach, California, native, began training to be a competitive surfer the summer before high school. Four years later, she arrived at Yale a nationally ranked professional with an interest in law and in mathematics. Although surf conditions on the East Coast pale in comparison with the West, she plans to join the Yale Surf Club and continue training for a national title.
