Class of 2011 - Application is now available

Helping out a neighbor yesterday, I noticed that the new UF application in now available online. The timeline for this year is:

This year UF only requires ONE essay (instead of the two from last year) of 400-500 words (max.). No pretentious quotes to elaborate on. Just the “run of the mill” :

How will your individual background, experiences and personal identity influence your educational pursuits and your contributions to the campus community at the University of Florida?

Now, what does everyone here think that is indicative of? Is UF admissions becoming more numbers driven (SAT, GPA) and less personalized? Or did they just find it problematic to read so many elaborate essays last year? Any other theories? I just find it strange.

One essay?! I’m so thrilled! That divides my stress level in half, haha. Is that the only essay question? No choices? I would probably pick that question over replying to some MLK quote or whatnot.

I’m applying Early Decision this year. I’m thinking about doing the online application in early September. Is that reasonable?

Also, did anyone send in recommendations when they applied? I have been offered by many teachers and volunteer coordinators letters of recommendation but I’m not sure if UF really considers them. Any personal experience?

I asked one of my teachers to write one for me (who is also a grad of UF). Given the number of applications they received, I highly doubt they read any of it since it’s optional
