Congratulations to those who got in, I know I would have loved to attend.

Son accepted today. We are thrilled. He got waitlisted at Vassar and Oberlin, so we weren’t expecting this. Congrats to all.

I really can’t seperate my memoriy about the open house or the first parents weekend - but my recollection (of both actually) is that it’s not critically imporant. I mean, how could they give out info at a session that only attracts X% of parents/students? What to bring/not to bring is fairly standard stuff - there are lists available on line. What I’d suggest though are the standard “extra long” twin size sheets for the beds, and a foam cushion top for the mattress - many kids find these most comfortable.

After those items, its pretty much clothes, room decor, computer/music.

Good Luck!

Oops re: Post #143. Posted on the wrong forum. Son was accepted to Wesleyan – Vassar’s just wishful thinking.

Just a question, how many people accepted to Vassar got accepted to less than half of their other schools? I got into Vassar, but I was rejected from Harvard, Brown, Princeton, MIT, Sarah Lawrence, Colorado College, AND Reed, so basically my safety was my only other choice. Still, though Vassar was my first choice, so it doesn’t matter. Anyone else with the same experience?

Rejected by Colorado College, Sarah Lawrence and Reed??? That’s pretty brutal, I have no idea.

Perhaps considering the absolutely unpredictable, inscrutable and utterly senseless nature of admissions (or should I call it rejections?), you could just say that it was really tough to get to any good college this year. Anyway it is supposed to get tougher and tougher, so bizarre cases like yours should become more common.

I got accepted to exactly half of the schools I applied to. However, my experience was similar to yours ColoBuddhist in that Vassar was the only non-safety school I was accepted at (my two safeties were Franklin & Marshall and Ursinus). I was rejected by Penn, Amherst, and Swarthmore (ED). I was also waitlisted at Haverford, but I prefer Vassar to Haverford so am not accepting a spot on the list.

I got rejected from all my Ivies (five of 'em), waitlisted at two schools, and accepted at 5 other schools besides Vassar (Amherst, Williams, Macalester, Northwestern, and RISD)

I’m actually having a hard time deciding between Vassar and Amherst. Umm? Any of you have any pointers?

Essays: Common App = ridiculous and (hopefully) original. I wrote about hair and how it expresses characteristics of people (“Fair. Unruly. A tease”). My Why Vassar was my stock Why [insert school], but it was actually true in this case - I talked about my three goals in life and how I saw them being met at Vassar (lots of artistics).
