Class of 2012: Taking as many SAT subject tests to become competitive

For the class of 2012, I heard that it is not required to take the subject tests for UCs and that if you take the subject tests anyways, you will become “more competitive”. So if you take more than half of the subject tests and got a 600+ on every one of them, would that make you more competitve than someone who just took 2 sat subject tests?

Not really.
Taking more tests doesn’t increase your chances if you don’t do “well” on them. I’m only going to submit 2-3 subject tests and get them over with by the end of this year.

Prepping for standardized tests takes a long time & I’m sure you’ll be more competitive if you do more extracurricular activities.

I noticed that on some applications though, you can only put a certain amount of extracurriculars as compared to the number of SAT subject tests.

Taking additional subject tests will probably only slightly make you a better candidate, but ultimately I doubt your admission decision would come down to taking that 3rd or 4th subject test. Getting a bunch of 600s is much less impressive than two 700+. You would not want to waste your time preparing for more than 3, and you are much better off investing your time in extra curriculars, volunteering, developing talents… having fun… etc

it depends what doing “well” is, 600s may be good for some schools but youd wanna get 780+ for schools like hyps. my advice is take all the ones that your curriculum prepares you for, dont bother learning a whole new subject just to take a test (unless you really want to)
