Class of 2013 Official RD Decision Thread

Uhh, you guys honestly believe that there is a positive correlation with number of posts and test scores/stats? I know people with 36s, 2400s, and 4.0s who have never gone on CC because they hate the palpable stress and desperation of the atmosphere. Maybe he is the same way most of the time.
I believe him. And congratulations on all you have achieved.

Nocturne’s stats are perfectly plausible but don’t guarantee acceptance at a school like WashU.

I wasn’t commenting on the number of posts assertion, actually. That is meaningless I think. I meant the scores seemed suspiciously perfect. The number of people that score that perfectly on that many tests is so small as to be negligible. But one clue that his post is fictitious are his own words:

“SAT I: 800M, 800CR, 800W, 12E, 80MC single session”
“ACT: 36 (36M, 36E, 36R, 35S, 10W) single session”
“I never do as well on the ACT essays as the SAT ones, for whatever reason”

That last statement implies multiple sessions, contradicting his claim he only took them once. I suppose you could say he took them other times and only the last time did he get those scores in a single session, but unless he is spending every weekend taking exams, this also seems unlikely. Also there is a STRONG correlation in test scores even over multiple takings, Kaplan and the other programs notwithstanding. Just too many flags to ignore, if this were really an investigation.

Mostly though, I thought it was just fairly amusing; unless any of you actually know this guy it is all rather pointless anyway. Just fun to speculate sometimes.

ACCEPTED

credit, i just copied someone format for this

Stats:

* SAT I: 710M, 680CR, 740W, 9E,

 • SAT IIs: 710 Biology, 710 Math I, 760Mathematics II, 730 U.S. History, 730Physics

 • GPA: 3.9 unweighted ~4.16 weighted

 • Other stats: APs: graduating with 11 : Euro, Comp Sci A, American, Lang, Stat, Physics B, Lit, Econ Micro, Macro, Calc BC, Chem

 • Essays: Amazingly written

 • Teacher Recs: Excellent. (was a student teacher for 2 years with one of my teachers)

 • Counselor Rec: Excellent.

 • Hook (if any): Lab research, Science research, poster for state level science competition, etc

Location/Person:

* Region: Northeast

 • School Type: Public, about 600 students
 • Ethnicity: White
 • Gender: Male

I looked at nocturne’s other post and I believe him… It says single-sitting, but he did take it more than once… I dont think THAT many more times, but it says his last test, kept the CR and W at 800 but raised math by 50 pts, so he did take it more than once. His strategy was to practice for a long time before-hand with as many practice tests he could get his hands on. In addition, his biggest piece of advice was just to practice because test-taking is a skill that may be strengthened through repetition in a familiar environment. Very small % of students are like him, but they exist and should be proud of their accomplishments. He may have gotten waitlisted at WashU, but he has gotten into some very good schools otherwise. Good luck to him.

Decision: Waitlisted

Stats:
-SAT I: 630 CR 780 M 650 W E-10 (one sitting)
-SAT IIs: 770 Math II 730 Chem 710 US H
-ACT: n/a
-GPA: 4.00 (unweighted), 4.44 (weighted)
-Rank: 1/204
-Other stats: Member of a Research Institute/H Rights Advocacy Group toward Lebanon. President of my church youth group (also an ethnic youth group). I play Rugby on a nationally competitive team (won an award for defense on the team). Teach bible classes at my church to kindergartners. Senior editor of Yearbook (only senior in the yearbook club). And a couple other minor-school-based clubs. (e.g. Investment Club). About 2-4 hrs of service per week (tutoring in school, out of school, et. al.)
-Essays: The writing for my essay was decent, but the topic was very unique IMO. I wrote about how I came to finally appreciate the land of my heritage (Leb) after experiencing the 2006 Summer War in the country and observing the interesting psychological state of those around me (and myself) while we were trapped in the country amidst warfare.
-Teacher Recs: One should be very good, another should be very good/good.
-Counselor Rec: I have no idea.
-Hook (if any): Not really. I guess I just have had more unique experiences in my life than the typical applicant. I live in Leb every summer, speak arabic, and (as you can see), much of my Ex-Cs are geared toward my heritage.
-State or Country:
-School Type: College-Prep
-Ethnicity: Leb.
-Gender: Male
-Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: My strengths include my GPA, class rank, Ex-Cs, Service, Essay, Some Recs. My weaknesses: SATs of course! (especially CR). SAT IIs are not that great, but I guess they are decent. I also showed no interest toward Wash U (visits, mailing list, etc.).

-Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/denied: I think I was waitlisted because of 1. My SAT score. 2. Lack of Interest. or probably 3. A combination of poor SAT scores and lack of interest.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I was actually expecting an acceptance, but looking at all the other more qualified applicants who were accepted/waitlisted, I realize I have no reason to complain. Wash U was my 2/3rd choice, so I am definitely staying on the waitlist. Congrats to all those who were accepted!

I totally understand why I waitlisted, but does anyone think I actually had a chance for Wash U, or have a chance for Duke? Thanks for your chances.

Your CR is a little low but that’s the only possible setback I see in your application. I think if you do a good job showing interest in WashU, you should stand a chance. Can’t really speak for Duke but I think you stand an excellent shot anywhere. Don’t be too down about being WL’d at WashU.

Yea I know my CR is very low (in respect to top schools of course) and my writing (which should really be 700+)!! But, thanks for the input. I would definetly not be suprised if Duke rejected/waitlisted me. I was just worried that I did not even stand a chance. I just wish I could retake the SAT so I can get at least 2100+.

Decision: Wait listed! Ah it’s horrible! lol at least I got inot V Tech.

Hey Guys, is there anyone from Nepal other than me who was waitlisted?

[ size=+1][ color=blue][ b]Decision: Waitlisted [ /b][ /color][ /size]

[ b]Stats:[ /b][ list]
[ *] SAT I: didn’t take
[ *] SAT IIs: didn’t take
[ *] ACT: 32 - I guess I just didn’t really realize how important it was to take the ACT. I’m from Minnesota, where literally everyone takes the ACT. I think only like 10 to 15 percent of my 3,000 student school takes the SAT. And colleges say they don’t care which one you take, but I’ve been rejected or waitlisted everywhere…
[ *] GPA: 3.96 unweighted
[ *] Rank: 36 of 790 - This is a complete joke. It’s a huge controversy at my school. We’re a huge sports school, so to protect the GPAs of the athletes, grades are unweighted. Historically, the majority of the valedictorians have been athletes who spent most of their time taking ceramics. I’m only just realizing now how much this may have hurt me.
[ *] Other stats: 4 AP Microeconomics, 5 more coming this year!
[ /list][ b]Subjective:[ /b][ list]
[ *] Essays: I think they were good. I honestly can’t remember which one I submitted. Kind of about growing up in the heartland.
[ *] Teacher Recs: Never saw them.
[ *] Counselor Rec: Never saw this either. Our school got like two new counselors this year. My counselor decided to retire the year before my senior year. I got one of the new guys, and, go figure, he has literally no counseling experience. My old one had done it for thirty years…
[ *] Hook (if any): Don’t know if you could call it a hook, but I spent some time living in someone’s home in China this summer.
[ /list][ b]Location/Person:[ /b][ list]
[ *] State or Country: Minnesota
[ *] School Type: Public
[ *] Ethnicity: White… and sick of being judged by it.
[ *] Gender: Female
[ *] Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: Class rank and the fact that I didn’t take the SAT are huge weaknesses. I thought I had a good shot because I really focused hard on my music in high school and didn’t join a million different things. I also have a ton of experience in the work force.
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Donno. Probably the test scores. And the fact that I’m a white female from the Midwest.
[ /list][ b]Other Factors:[ /b]
[ b]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:[ /b] I really don’t think I’ll go here now. Even if I do get accepted mid-June, I don’t think I can handle that psychologically. By the time May 1 rolls around, I want to focus on the college I chose, none of this after-the-fact stuff. I’ll probably end up at the U of MN, the worst thing that could ever happen in the world, but it seems like maybe it’s my only choice. Congrats to everyone who got in!

yeah i got invited to the multicultural weekend but didn’t the moog fellowship…but i got the summer scholars program! idk if i’ll go there though…
