Subjective:
Essays: Most people really liked it.
Teacher Recs: English teacher that I’ve known since freshman year and Chem teacher; didn’t see them, but Chem teacher nominated me for Danforth without me knowing (last year, he nominated a girl and she got it)
Counselor Rec: Didn’t see it, but she’s nominated me for awards like my Chem teacher (i.e. without me knowing), so it should be good - she at least likes me
Hook (if any): I go to TJHSST, but I don’t know if that is a “hook” or actually a hinderance since I’m compared to other TJ kids. Otherwise, I show real focus in what I want to do, and I am not a premed kid.

Location/Person:
State or Country: VA
School Type: Science Magnet School (TJHSST)
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths: Science Aptitude, Test Scores/GPA, Essay. Maybe also that I showed a lot of interest (visit to school/interview with alumnus, many scholarship apps) and the fact that one of my teachers nominated me for Danforth without me knowing (he wrote a rec for someone last year, and she got it)
Weaknesses: No outstanding EC’s beside research, no big science awards to back interest/big awards in general

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I’ve talked to some people I know at private schools, and it seems like I didn’t write the right kind of essay. They say their counselors told them to write an essay saying how you can contribute to the school, which I didn’t do. Also, I guess comparison with other TJ kids, but I think that’s doubtful.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I was disappointed that I was waitlisted, especially since I got nominated for Danforth and filled out apps to Moog/Summer Scholars program - waitlist means that those apps didn’t even get read, so the time I put into them was virtually wasted. Also, Wash U was the first school I visited and fell in love with. Some people say that I was “overqualified” and that yield protection came into play, but I don’t know if I buy that. I think my essay not saying how I can contribute the school probably hurt me the most. Without merit aid, though, I couldn’t have gone (I don’t qualify for FA), so I knew I probably couldn’t go there anyway. Not getting in at all still hurt.

Congrats to everyone that got in!
