Decision: Accepted

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT I: 2170 (R: 690, M: 780, W: 700)
[] SAT IIs: Math 2: 780, Bio (E): 800, Lit (LOL): 620
[] ACT: 35
[] GPA: 4.62 Weighted / 4.0 Unweighted
[] Rank: Top 4% (School doesn’t rank)
[] Other stats:
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: It was ok. My essay seemed slightly conversational, because I wrote about my leadership position in Key Club. Couldn’t figure out how to sound more formal in a personal statement…
[] Teacher Recs: No idea. I never saw the letter nor did my teacher say anything about it to me. Although she is my Key Club faculty advisor, so that couldn’t hurt considering that was my main EC.
[] Counselor Rec: No idea. She never told me anything.
[] Hook (if any): Maybe because I’m a Lieutenant Governor in Key Club combined with good grades / test scores (minus my Lit score LOL) ? Not sure. Didn’t apply for financial aid though.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: California
[] School Type: Public (700-750 students per class)
[] Ethnicity: Asian (Chinese/Taiwanese)
[] Gender: Male
[] Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: I didn’t have a huge list of ECs, but instead I had one or two very strong ones. I listed a few of the others ECs, but focused my essay on my strongest one. My SAT literature score definitely was not a plus, but I guess they didn’t weigh it too heavily against me considering I applied for the school of engineering (bioe or biomed, I can’t remember).
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Wish I knew.
[/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Good luck to everyone! Two more weeks until the rest of them come out.

Decision: Accepted (College of Art)

Stats:
SAT I: CR 760, M 660, W 700
SAT IIs: Lit: 740 Math I: 610
GPA: 3.5 unweighted
Rank: no rank (my school discourages competitiveness)
Other stats: Editor in Chief of Literary and Visual Arts Publication, Photo Intern for Alumni Magazine, raised $1000 selling handmade Obama shirts in 2008, volunteer work in New Orleans and at a local animal shelter, study abroad in France, outside art class at SAIC, certified PADI Rescue Diver (working towards Divemaster at 18), work experience as a swimming instructor to young children and as a babysitter, tons of Advanced/AP classes (but school doesn’t follow “official” AP curriculum and I have no AP scores to speak of)

Subjective:
Essays: I’m a great writer; topic was how divorce and split-custody shaped me
Teacher Recs: no clue (probably touting my creativity, writing ability)
Counselor Rec: warm for certain, probably in praise of my unusually smooth transition from large public school in IL to small boarding school in MA junior year
Hook (if any): Moved to intense boarding school, good writer, interesting ECs/community service, creative and artistic (I sent a portfolio)

Location/Person:
State or Country: IL/MA (I board in MA)
School Type: Large Public (9/10)/Private Boarding (11/12)
Ethnicity: Caucasian but not reported
Gender: Female
Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: Strengths are creativity, portfolio, and writing. Weaknesses are grades and punctuality (I’m a perfectionistic procrastinator, “does not work to full potential” type)
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: My portfolio probably compensated for academic performance, and I handcrafted the CD’s envelope with a little “WashU” collage. Silly, but I think it stood out. I’m also Editor in Chief of the school’s Literary and Visual Arts publication.
Other Factors:I did not apply for any FA or scholarship.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I can’t believe I got in! Good luck to waitlistees.

**Accepted =] **

Stats:
SAT I: Math-750 Verb-700 Writ-680 (2130)
SAT IIs: US History: 720 Math II: 780
ACT: None
GPA: 3.98 UW/School does not weight; but taken highest number of AP courses in the entire grade.
Rank: Top 10%/125
Other stats: I’m President/Leader of three school organizations and Editor In Chief of my School’s Yearbook. I’ve been hosting charity dinners for four summers now. I worked as an intern at the Obama Campaign and made art for them. I invited a political artist to come create environmental art at my school. Winner of a Statewide Humanitarian award.

Subjective:
Essays: About an experience I had while painting, fascination with Van Gogh, the painting process; all in all, very passionate and expressed my desire to continue learning art. Not neccesarily unique; but well-written.
Teacher Recs: 1 really strong one (she adores me); 1 pretty good–not exceptional, though
Counselor Rec: Good, she knows me well and really likes me.
Hook (if any): Nothing really. My Art? Probably not.

Location/Person:
State or Country: FL
School Type: College Prep School (Independent)
Ethnicity: Asian (Indian)
Gender: Female

Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: My grades, essay and by far extracurricular work and service. SATs were okay. I also sent in an art portfolio and art resume with a recommendation from a professor I had at the Art Institute of Chicago. He was great and really loved my art work.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I don’t know for sure why, but I tried my best to make my application as holistic as possible. I sent in whatever that could verbally/artistically enhance my application. Being an Asian, there is NO way I could have gotten in purely on scores. My leadership was incredibly strong also.

Other Factors: I sent in two newspaper articles noting service/art that I’ve contributed/organized in the community.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I’m sincerely happy. I wasn’t expecting this in the slightest, especially with all the amazing waitlistees. And after a deferral from Brown, I kind of lost hope. I still have a few more schools to wait on, but it’s nice knowing that one school wants me. Good luck to the waitlistees, trust me I know what it feels like after being deferred/waitlisted–it CAN feel terrible. But alway always–it’s what you make of it. =]
