Class of 2013 Official RD Decision Thread

thelovepizza: Thanks for the reply. Good luck with your other colleges!

Decision: Accepted

Objective:

* ACT: 33

 • GPA: 4.32 weighted, 3.95 unweighted
 • Rank: 22/336
 • Senior Year Course Load: IB Anthropology, IB Senior English, IB Biology, IB Calculus, IB Spanish Immersion, IB History of the Americas
 • Major Awards: National Merit Scholar - Commended, National Honor Society

Subjective:

* Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Varsity Lacrosse, Peer Mentor, Spanish tutor at a low income elementary school, recreational soccer and basketball, ultimate frisbee club

 • Job/Work Experience: I have worked for the past two summers at a grocery store.
 • Volunteer/Community service: Listed above with extracurriculars.
 • Summer Activities: I went to Costa Rica last summer with The School for Field Studies, where I compiled a research paper regarding their national parks. Earned 4 college credits in Environmental Science.
 • Essays: I talked about bungee jumping in Costa Rica. It was a metaphor for having established a strong sense of self/independence over the years.
 • Teacher Recs: From an English and Biology teacher, both from Junior year. I think my English teacher wrote a good one, although both had many to write…
 • Counselor Rec: I think this was good, but I go to a large school so she doesn’t know be personally
 • Additional Rec: From one of my professors in Costa Rica, I think this might have helped.
 • Interview: Not very good. My interviewer was hard to talk to, and I was really nervous.
 • Hook (if any): I visited campus and showed strong interest.

Other:

* Financial Aid?: Yes.

 • State or Country: Oregon
 • School Type: Private
 • Ethnicity: Caucasian
 • Gender: Female
 • Income Bracket: Middle class, two siblings will be in college at the same time as me.
 • Perceived Strengths: I am fluent in Spanish (part of a Spanish Immersion program since Kindergarten), solid grades/test scores.
 • Perceived Weaknesses: White girl with good grades, haha. Also, since Wash U is not need blind, my family’s income.
 • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/denied: Honestly, I was pretty shocked I was accepted. I think a big part of it was connecting with my area’s admissions representative. He came to my school to talk about Wash U, and I kept in contact with him, letting him know how much I loved the school.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I posted another thread about this, but I was accepted in to the January Program instead of a fall start. A group of about 40 students join the rest of their class after a fall semester of independent experiences (study abroad, internships, etc.). I will graduate with the rest of my class in 2013, I will just start later.

I’m very grateful to have been accepted at such an amazing school. I am even more surprised after looking at some of your incredibly competitive profiles. Good luck to everyone!

Teacher Recs: I think they liked me.
Counselor Rec: She just came this year, but I think she liked me as I came to visit her and get to know her.
Hook (if any): Hmmm I don’t know if this really defines hook, but I focused on my future career goal of becoming a doctor and my reasons for doing so (brother’s illness, shadowing of surgeon experience)
State or Country: CA
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Chinese
Gender: Female
Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: Writing/SATs
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Seeing that my SAT scores and GPA were a little below par of those waitlisted, I think the deciding factors were my essays. I spent a lot of time working on them and they really define me and give a glimpse of who I am and my future goals.

Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:
After seeing all the stats of people being waitlisted, I feel really grateful to be accepted into WUSTL. This is a great school, but I still am waiting for my first choices to respond before I make a decision.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:: This gives a little hope for Emory and Vanderbilt…I am defintly taking a spot on the waitllist(I know they waitlist everyone, and I will never get in, but anything is better than a rejection, since I was rejected from Rice and Notre Dame in early action and early decision Round)

basically…i’m in! (:

ps…i don’t really appreciate the people that are saying they’re overqualified
i think it’s a bit disrespectful
if you think you’re too good for washu why did you apply? and saying you did that because it’s your “safety” is a miscalculation on your part.
i got in washu and was deferred from UNC…and i did not complain or claim that I was overqualified
people need to stop thinking so highly of themselves. different schools look for different things from their students.

Here is the format for when decisions do come out. The trick is to take the spaces out of the brackets before you post. If you don’t then the formatting won’t work.

hey dan, sorry to hear your misfortune. you were a very qualified applicant (still are!)

washu has need aware admisions so you applying for lots of fin aid may have been why you got waitlisted. i have a hard time believing this “overqualified waitlist” conjecturing. from what i’ve seen, it seems like if you were a strong applicant, didn’t apply for fin aid, and at least showed some interest in washu, you were accepted.

danr, in any case, best of luck, im sure you’ll do fine at your other schools. plus if washu is still a top choice of yours, i would strongly recommend writing them a letter informing them as such.

thanks bulldog, yeah i already accepted a spot on the waitlist and started writing a letter and compiling a few other updates of awards and such that i’ve gotten since i sent in my app to send to them now. hopefully itll make a difference.

congrats on your acceptance, and good luck with yale.

im really upset now. does this mean i can’t get in any school that has a lower acceptance rate than washu? i would really like to get in duke or upenn. but this waitlist from washu really discourages me. any ideas?

(4 this year). two 4’s (sci) , 3 5’s (humanities). i applied for a humanities major.
Why you think you were waitlisted: SAT2’s, math scores, (essay??)
[ b]Other Factors:**
General Comments: kinda nervous about all my other colleges now…like seriously nervous.

tootangy,

I think people are mentioning the “overqualified” issue because WashU is “known” for waitlisting people who are overqualified. I’ve even heard a guidance counselor talk about it. No disrespect is intended. I’m sure most people here applied because they genuinely wanted to attend, but there may be some who applied as a safety. I’ve heard of people who were accepted at MIT, Yale, etc. being waitlisted at WashU.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:
Congrats to everyone, I wasn’t really expecting to find out on Friday. I suppose it was a nice surprise, though I’ll be honest and say I had decided in December I wasn’t going to apply, but I’d already paid the fee in August…(because I decided if I got into Northwestern or UChicago I’d rather go there, since I lived in the city for 2 years and love chi-town)

But it is really nice knowing that I got in to a top school (and it gives me hope for the even more selective schools), and if I don’t get into one of my top schools (Stanford, Yale, Penn, Brown), I’m definitely going to have to visit it and decide. Kind of wishing I didn’t get lazy and applied for a scholarship, but oh well.
