Class of 2013 Official RD Decision Thread

waitlisted.

post stats in a bit.

30 act was my downfall. ha. i wasnt expecting an acceptance.

Accepted! dont really feel like posting stats but very similar to those accepted so far.

Decision: Accepted to College of Arts and Sciences

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT I: 2330 (800 CR, 800 W, 730 M)
[] SAT IIs: 790 Literature, 690 US History, 610 Math II
[] ACT: 33 (36 E, 34 R, 33 S, 31 M) (didn’t send)
[] GPA: 4.77 W, 3.95 UW
[] Rank: 8/520
[] Other stats: Have taken 9 AP’s, about a dozen dual enrollment courses, work 25 hours per week during school year/full time during summers since freshman year, over 200 hours of community service, participated in a work-study program for 3+ years

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Excellent – writing is my forte
[] Teacher Recs: Outstanding – English teacher told me that I’m the strongest student he has taught during his career and has nominated me for a number of academic scholarships; environmental science teacher volunteered to write a recommendation for me as well (used for scholarship application)
[] Counselor Rec: Presumably strong – my guidance counselor knows me quite well and seems to think highly of me
[] Hook (if any): Hold a provisional patent and have received state/national recognition for long-term original independent research

[/ul]Location/Person:

[] State or Country: CA
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: Female
[li] Perceived Strengths: Relatively strong SAT scores, long-term interest and selective extracurricular involvement demonstrated in the areas in which I plan to major, have enrolled in numerous college courses above and beyond what is offered at my school, demonstrated interest via visit/scholarship applications/USP application, etc.
[/li]

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:

I was given a travel grant (paid for by Wash U) to visit campus in the fall of last year, and while WUSTL was (and still remains) my first choice school, without an academic scholarship (and presumably in the dearth of financial aid), it is going to be virtually impossible for me to attend. :frowning: I was also granted finalist status for the University Scholars Program in Law.

Congrats to all those accepted and best of luck to those waitlisted!

**Decision: Accepted- College of Engineering **

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT I: CR: 660, W: 700, M: 720 T: 2080
[] SAT IIs: Math 2: 680, Physics: 670
[] ACT: Didn’t Take
[] GPA: 3.63/4.30
[] Rank: School Doesn’t Rank
[] Other stats: Club Leadership, Debate, Computer Activities, Internship

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I poured my heart and soul into them
[] Teacher Recs: decent (I assume)
[] Counselor Rec: good (I assume)
[] Hook (if any): Insane course load

[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: MD
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Indian
[] Gender: Male
[] Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: Has a pretty bad slip up in grades
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: It is an honor to be accepted. I really believe that WashU judged me as an applicant and looked past a lot of my lesser information to admit me.

[/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Excited :)

Decision: WAITLISTED!!!

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT I: 2070 (730M 650CR 690W 8E)
[] SAT IIs: 770 USH 720 MII 710 Lit
[] ACT: 33
[] GPA: 4.0 UW
[] Rank: 1/308
[] Other stats: 4 AP’s, all 5’s
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: ok…i reread them and don’t like them anymore…I think i could write a better essay now.
[] Teacher Recs: good, from what i saw
[] Counselor Rec: no idea
[] Hook (if any): nope
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: CA
[] School Type: public
[] Ethnicity: white
[] Gender: m
[] Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: all around bland…nothing stands out.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/denied: again, I’m bland. I have decent scores and good grades, w/EC’s and all, but I don’t pop anywhere.
[/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I actually don’t mind…I already got into Macalester, so I was pretty sure I wouldn’t end up at WUSTL. Still wouldn’t have minded having the option though…

Decision: wait listed
I don’t think that I would have been able to afford to go here anyways, so whatever. Got into the other ten schools I applied to so it’s not like I needed to get in here. Congratulations to all of you who were accepted, and good luck to my fellow wait-listers who still do wish to go here!

Decision: Waitlisted (Hoo-ah!)

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT I: 2240
[] SAT IIs: 680 World History, 740 French, 690 Math I
[] GPA: A complete mystery, due to certain factors (look below). Normally the weighted quarter grade is a 4.1
[] APs: French Lang: 5, AP English Comp (self study): 5, French Lit: 3. Currently taking AP Bio, AP US History, and AP English Lit. Which is more than anyone else in my class will graduate with.
[] Rank: My counselor swears top 5% but I’m not sure if I believe her.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Never loved 'em. The main one covered my experience living abroad in france for junior year (hence the confusion over my GPA). Second talked about my experience with Speech & Debate. I am a solid writer but I doubt these would ‘get me in’ anywhere.
[] Teacher Recs: One fairly good (translated rec from french teacher), another so-so (he barely knew me at time.)
[] ECs: Speech & Debate, Degree of Special Distinction- I have a fairly strong record, State Champ, a few National wins.
Violin- 11 yrs of work, nothing special.
I’ve held down a summer job for two years Organic Farming for forty hours a week.
… and then the basic smattering of community service and such.
[] Counselor Rec: Stellar. I am better than sliced bread.
[] Hook (if any): Nada. Year abroad? (hahah… new joke)
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: MAAAAH-SAH-CHEW-SETTS!
[] School Type: Small, catholic, and somewhat mediocre.
[] Ethnicity: White as a sugar cookie.
[] Gender: Female
[] Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: ECs/Year Abroad (it was a pretty respected program)
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: (a) Never expressed a whole lot of interest, I might fit the “Ivy-safety” profile- if I did, I’d be flattered. I never loved this school. (b) Grades have always had a sprinkling of Bs, horrible math grades (C range) the past two years. (c) I fo-sure needed some of that Financial Aid.
[/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Thought I was getting a flat-out rejection, so I’m happy enough to settle for waitlisted, even if it’s basically the samething with WashU.

**Decision: Accepted **

[] Rank: top 1%
[] Other stats:
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: good but not great, I think
[] Teacher Recs: one was very good, I don’t know about the other one
[] Counselor Rec: very good
[] Hook (if any): none

Subjective:

Essays: My personal essay was a heartfelt narrative about how I came to terms with my sexuality by falling in love. It was the major turning point in my life, and I feel I did it as much justice as words possibly can.
Teacher Recs: I submitted 2: one from my AP Biology teacher and one from my history teacher/Scholar Bowl coach. The former focuses on my intellectual interests and insights, while the latter focuses on my personality and personal growth (this teacher has known me throughout high school). Both are glowing; I couldn’t have asked for better.
Counselor Rec: Aside from writing an enthusiastic recommendation, my counselor went to great lengths to explain the scheduling issues and relatively few opportunities at my high school. I owe her for explaining the situation.
Interview: We talked about my broad range of interests, which include Molecular Biology, Philosophy, Psychology, Astronomy, and Latin. It was a good opportunity to round out my application and express my interest (WashU is/was my #1 choice).
Expressed Interest: I visited campus, expressed interest during my interview, and applied for 3 scholarships.
Extracurriculars: Editor of the School Literature Magazine (1y), Scholar Bowl Team (2y), Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) Team (2y)
Awards/Honors: National Merit Commended Student, 6th in the State of Illinois in Biological Science (WYSE), Artwork Displayed @ City Art Show, Yale Book Award for “intellectual promise”

State or Country: Illinois

Perceived Strengths: Expressed Interest, Intellectual Vitality, Strong Recommendations, Heartfelt Essay

** Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied:** As I said above, I think my lack of foreign language (despite the efforts of my amazing counselor) and relatively weak ECs did it.
