I was given a travel grant (paid for by Wash U) to visit campus in the fall of last year, and while WUSTL was (and still remains) my first choice school, without an academic scholarship (and presumably in the dearth of financial aid), it is going to be virtually impossible for me to attend. I was also granted finalist status for the University Scholars Program in Law.

[] GPA: A complete mystery, due to certain factors (look below). Normally the weighted quarter grade is a 4.1
[] APs: French Lang: 5, AP English Comp (self study): 5, French Lit: 3. Currently taking AP Bio, AP US History, and AP English Lit. Which is more than anyone else in my class will graduate with.
[] Rank: My counselor swears top 5% but I’m not sure if I believe her.

[] Essays: Never loved 'em. The main one covered my experience living abroad in france for junior year (hence the confusion over my GPA). Second talked about my experience with Speech & Debate. I am a solid writer but I doubt these would ‘get me in’ anywhere.
[] Teacher Recs: One fairly good (translated rec from french teacher), another so-so (he barely knew me at time.)
[] ECs: Speech & Debate, Degree of Special Distinction- I have a fairly strong record, State Champ, a few National wins.
Violin- 11 yrs of work, nothing special.

… and then the basic smattering of community service and such.

(b) Grades have always had a sprinkling of Bs, horrible math grades (C range) the past two years. (c) I fo-sure needed some of that Financial Aid.

The former focuses on my intellectual interests and insights, while the latter focuses on my personality and personal growth (this teacher has known me throughout high school). Both are glowing; I couldn’t have asked for better.
Counselor Rec: Aside from writing an enthusiastic recommendation, my counselor went to great lengths to explain the scheduling issues and relatively few opportunities at my high school. I owe her for explaining the situation.
Interview: We talked about my broad range of interests, which include Molecular Biology, Philosophy, Psychology, Astronomy, and Latin. It was a good opportunity to round out my application and express my interest (WashU is/was my #1 choice).
Expressed Interest: I visited campus, expressed interest during my interview, and applied for 3 scholarships.
