Both the Colleges of Engineering and Arts and Sciences

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT I: 2330 (800M, 800CR, 730W)
[] SAT IIs: 800 M2, 790 Physics, 780 M1, 750 Bio, 700 World History
[] ACT: 35 (not sent, I think)
[] GPA: 4.0 UW
[] Rank: Top 2%
[] Other stats: AP Calc BC and Physics C Mechanics: 5, AP Bio: 4, AP French Lang: 2; AMC 12: 105, AIME: 5
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I liked it a lot and it’s gotten me into other schools; about a very specific audition experience that changed the way I looked at music.
[] Teacher Recs: VERY strong
[] Counselor Rec: No clue. She respects me and realizes that I am one of the strongest students in my school.
[] Hook (if any): Musician; Female for engineering
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: MA
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[] Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: I would say my application on the whole was strong; my interview was rather short, but we talked about some good stuff. I am rather unusual because I play bassoon and all orchestras need bassoonists (I know the orchestra director listened to my CD and asked admissions to accept me)
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Music+engineering are two of WashU’s weaker points; I also visited on one of WashU’s grants during the fall
[/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I know WashU is a great school, but I really don’t think it’s really the place for me. I decided not to apply for scholarships because I knew I probably wouldn’t go even if I got the scholarships. I didn’t need the temptation to attend a place that really wasn’t my best match. But obviously any acceptance feels good. I will be quick to reply so that hopefully my spot will go to someone on the waitlist.

**Decision: WAITLISTED **

[] Rank: school doesn’t rank
[] Other stats: AP’s: APUSH (4), Latin Lit (5), English Lang (4)
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: pretty decent, I think
[] Teacher Recs: read one of them and it was fabulous, other is probably good
[] Counselor Rec: she knows me well & likes me, I think
[] Hook (if any): none, really.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: CT
[] School Type: small private
[] Ethnicity: white
[] Gender: female
[] Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: my EC’s are probably my best asset. my GPA isn’t very impressive.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I’m not a big standout and I applied for financial aid.
[/ul]**Other Factors: none. **
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: WashU was in my top three and I was driving home tonight thinking about how I really wanted to go there. Then I got waitlisted. At least I didn’t get rejected, I guess.

So, seriously,
nobody got rejected?

To admit waitlisted is already a “slap in the face” for some, but to come to term with a rejection take longer to absorb, especially when ALL hopes were in WASHU.

Decision: Waitlisted

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT I: 2290
[] SAT IIs: Bio 770, Chem 800, Math II 800, US History 800
[] GPA: 4.0 unweighted
[] Rank: 1/535 but more like 30/535
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Average? To be honest I don’t remember which essay I ended up using, or what I wrote about (bad sign, probably suppressing bad memories of last fall).
[] Teacher Recs: I don’t remember if I had two teacher recs either. I might’ve just sent one. It would’ve been decent, I guess.
[] Counselor Rec: Decent?
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: CA
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Female
[] Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: I had a nice set of EC’s, a portfolio, research experience, and pretty good stats. But it was really nothing special and I sort of gave up on essays after a while.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: No interview/contact whatsoever (as in I actually forgot to call for an interview), my intended major (biochem + premed, neither of which I actually want to do and maybe they could detect that)[/li][/ul]
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: WashU was never my first choice or anything, but ouch. I totally understand though, haha.

Accepted!!
ACT 33
GPA 3.85 UW – took most challenging classes available

Applied for scholarships and visited, so the “showed interest” area was good.

Applied for FA, even though probably won’t qualify. Unlikely to attend at full cost.

international, wait-listed…thought i’ll be rejected so i’m ok…i guess

seems like many are wait-listed

Decision: Waitlisted

Stats:
* ACT: 35
* GPA: 3.7 UW
* Rank: Top 10%

Subjective:

* Essays: Good, but (REALLY) dark essay about family conflict- I’m not going into detail, and as no one but me and my adcoms has read the essay, I’m keeping it that way.

 • Teacher Recs: Was good- stated that I was an intelligent guy that was consistently ahead of the class.
 • Counselor Rec: She stated it was one of the best she’d given in her 20-ish year career (^-^)

Location/Person:

* State or Country: KS

 • School Type: Public
 • Ethnicity: Hispanic
 • Gender: Male
 • Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: Good ECs, nice stats, and huge demonstrated motivation (I accomplished this with a consistent 50hr/week job)
 • Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: In all odds, they probably predicted (correctly) that I had good odds at the Ivys, and thus was less than likely to attend. My EFC may have played a factor as well, as it was extremely low. Oh, and my essay wasn’t “Rainbows and Butterflies” like most; it was quite gritty.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I’m not worried about this one; I already have a Yale SCEA admit under my belt, so all is well.

Decision: Wait List

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT I: 2270 (690 R, 800 M, 780 W)
[] SAT IIs: 800 Math II, 800 Chem, 740 Physics
[] ACT: 35 (36 E, 36 M, 34 R, 34 S… 8 on writing)
[] GPA: 4.0 UW; 4.6 W
[] Rank: School Doesn’t rank – top 5%
[] Other stats: National Merit Finalist; Presidential Scholars Candidate (applied for becoming a finalist); Arkansas All-State 1st Band 2nd Chair (trombone); Various State-wide band awards (all top ratings); writing a 50+ page senior thesis (elective Senior course)
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: My teachers and counselors really liked it, so I assume it’s really good.
[] Teacher Recs: Didn’t read (I think they were pretty good)
[] Counselor Rec: didn’t read; probably very good (I know my counselor very well)
[] Hook (if any): Music, maybe, and scholarships (maybe not a hook, but tipping factors, potentially… but really, no real hooks)
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Arkansas
[] School Type: Private
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender:Male
[] Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: Grades, test scores (esp. ACT and SAT II’s), some EC stuff (i don’t have it listed here b/c I’m in class right now and am trying to get my thesis finished, lol)
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Not sure; I actually was expecting to get wait listed by WashU because I know some people from last year with similar stats to mine, and they got wait listed or rejected by WashU but got accepted to Harvard, Yale, and MIT (not all, but between my friends, those were their schools)
[/ul][li]Other Factors:** I did apply for financial aid, and they are not need blind, so that could have hurt me (maybe… i don’t think so, though)[/li]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Congrats to everyone who got in; you all deserved it. They wait listed me for a reason – either they didn’t like something on my application or they thought I’d hurt their yield chances (potential HYPSM acceptance maybe [i doubt that, though, so I’m more inclined to think they just didn’t think I would quite cut it for WashU])

again, congrats to all who were accepted!

Decision: accepted =]

[] Other stats: All 4’s on Calc AB, US History, Euro History, English Lang
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I thought it was pretty good. I wrote about my love for languages and how it connected with my desire to go into Business. It was short and sweet. I’m guessing they liked it.
[] Teacher Recs: Got one from my favorite teacher (Economics). I was top student in all 3 classes but was kind of quiet. So the rec could have been amazing or average.
[] Counselor Rec: Probably nothing special. Just wrote down my stats.
[] Hook (if any): Significant upward trend. I did kind of poorly freshman year but ended up with A’s throughout junior and senior year (so far). Badminton. A lot of Art ECs including holding the first Art Editor position for the school newspaper. Volunteering at local shelters…
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Illinois
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian

[] Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: I guess they liked my upward trend and well-roundedness? Also my passion for languages/business. My teacher recommendation may have helped… not sure though
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I really don’t know. I saw WashU as a bit of a reach and I was waiting for April to come around to see my acceptance. I was surprised to see my admission packet.
[/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I am ecstatic. Congrats to everyone who got accepted! And I wish good luck to the people who were waitlisted.

[/ul]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:
Congrats to everyone who got in (see you at multicultural weekend?). For those who were disappointed, don’t worry! You’ll find a great school that appreciates who you are.

Do the decisions come in the mail or online?

I haven’t received anything yet.

So I was just admitted to Olin as a regular admission applicant and invited to a Business Open House weekend of some sort (Olin Spotlight Weekend). However, I am Mexican American and was invited to the Multicultural Weekend as well. I suppose they are willing to pay for me to attend both weekends? I’m not sure, but they said everything was covered in both invitations.
Futhermore, I did not recieve any of the scholarships I applied for at the school and I don’t think there is anything left that they haven’t notified us about. I would feel pretty bad if they flew me up twice and then I just didn’t attend for financial reasons. Anyone else in the same boat??? Invited to both??
