Is there really a need to bring a small fridge and a microwave aling to have in your dorm room? Your thoughts please.

that’s …along

the atm on campus is bank of america

The boa atm is located in Cotter, next to the post office. There use to be a TD BankNorth atm in Bob’s, but it seems to have been removed this past year.

I would definitely bring a fridge, they’re useful to have. I personally wouldn’t spend the money on a new microwave if you don’t already have one, all the dorms have kitchenettes with microwaves. There is also the option to buy either for cheap at the “rescue” sale Colby hosts on move-in day.

Hope that helps.

An appliance extension cord may come in handy. S ended up buying one at the campus bookstore.

Agree with the fridge. S liked having a small microwave in his room but he used his fridge more. The microwave was mainly for popcorn and heating up stuff.

Just in case anyone’s wondering what’s a good amount to put on their ColbyCard, that’s entirely up to you based on your spending habits. But please note that you don’t get back the balance on the card until you graduate, so don’t put in too much all at once. It’s quite easy to add dollars to the card. Also, the student has to request the refund upon graduation; it won’t be given back automatically.

I noticed on Colby’s website that incoming students are now requested to email their photos. This will save a lot of time on check-in day, and at least the kids can choose a nice picture for their ID.

Hi there Mountains-- I’ve got another question for you, if you don’t mind. As an anxious Class of '13er, I’ve heard from a variety of sources about when we’ll be receiving info about our Dorm assignments. Some say we’ll know by August 1, and others say sometime mid-August. Do you by chance remember when your S got his assignment?

Thank you so much-- reading all of your answers on CC has been a life saver!

Sorry, Whybenormal529 - all my S could remember is “sometime in August.” Maybe you can call Colby and ask for Housing. They probably will be able to give you better answer. Colby staff members are quite helpful.

Thanks, mountains, I think I’ll do just that. :)

… and let the rest of us know what you find out! (everybody’s anxious about The Big Roommate Question!)

DOS said that all room selections are done. They are double and triple checking and will post them by next friday, 7/31. We will be notified via email

Yeah, I just called and got the same response. They said to keep an eye out for them in the coming week!

so, guys, do I tell this to D, and watch the stress-out-teenage-crazies that ensue? Or do I just sit on this piece of news? hmmmmm?

I can just see the FB searches on that day … S and his roommate actually had a common friend! Amazing coincidence.

Just a heads up. The past few years room assignments have been posted in the online student directory before any official announcement is sent by Colby (although, as of now they are still pending). The fun part, once you know your room, is clicking through every freshmen to find your roommate if you can’t wait for the Colby mailing.

They’re posted-- D found out hers today! she hasn’t waded through to figure out the roommate yet. Nice that Colby puts the floorplans on the website, though!

Okay, so they’ve had to go on Facebook again and tell all the kids to settle down–the info that was posted yesterday was just preliminary, and the final info on room assignments will go out at the end of this week/early next week. Seems like they should have learned their lesson after the course sign-up craziness! The kids are too computer-savvy for the poor administrators to keep up! :p

It’s what happens when Campus Life is slow in sending out info…students get restless and start searching through the “back door” of the Colby directory.

My guess is that the rooms posted were actually accurate (my room was [I’m going to be a junior]), but beloved campus life didn’t want the info available before they officially sent it out.

If history tells us anything then those dorms are correct. I am not sure if any of you remember but I was able to check my admissions status 15 hours early on their website because admitted students had the “submit deposit form” open, waitlists had “keep on waitlist” and others had nothing. Colby is thinking if they put up all the bricks in the arch without the keystone that the info will be unfound, well guess what this is 2009 and we are better with computers than they are. Let the searching for info begin!

Is it worth getting a closet organizer or is there enough storage in the dorms? Colby says that they provide a closet/wardrobe and a dresser so I am wondering if more storage is necessary.
