Class of 2014!

I love Williams too, but again not applying for the same reasons as Amherst.

It is a weird name. But not as weird as Colgate. When I tell people I’m applying to a place called Colgate they’re like “LIKE THE TOOTHPASTE.” Yes. Like the toothpaste.

It’s neither. It’s Amerst. (The whole merst is quick.)

Lol Amherst was named after Lord Amherst, right? I came across a conversation about Lord Amherst in The Sea Of Poppies and no lie, I read it like seven times.

Haha I didn’t want to apply to Colgate because of the name. But I am going to.

Wow, that IS extremely loyal. Even I’m applying to Williams, and I even liked their brochure.

Oh my god, yeah! Me too, Colgate and Occidental went right off the list. Sorry, I can’t. And, I mean, I had over 50 choices to narrow down to 12. So any criteria came in handy.

Lol thats not actually the only reason I’m not applying to Williams. I read some article about racism and homophobia at Williams and I was like, oh please I don’t need another Malaysia. Although most Malaysians aren’t racist.

What’s it like being gay in Malaysia? You can totaaaaaaaaaally ignore this if you want to.

I don’t REALLY love Williams. It seems sort of…homogeneous and…I don’t know. But I’d be lucky to go there, I guess.

Lol I’ve got 17 schools on my list. And the only reason it isn’t 18 is because I forgot to take down Macalester’s mailing address the day my school mailed in school forms.

Quasi - Haha its fine, I don’t mind. That’s good though cause Mac is one of my 12 schools. :)

Being gay in Malaysia is sort of weird. I mean most people assume it doesn’t really happen here, its in the West, apparently. I definitely am not out here and I only know of a few gay people. Lol. I’ve had some good coming out experiences, some bad. It pretty much sucks and is one of the reasons why I need to get away and be myself for a while.

Weird fact is that I wrote about this in my common app essay. I printed it out to do some minor changes and left it on my table. My mom finds it and bang, I’m out to my mom. She was very supportive though, surprisingly, More sad that I wanted to go to America to study. “Too far”, according to her.

Good for New Delhi for decriminalizing homosexuality though. Gives me hope that someday Msia might follow that.

Oh, WOW about the way your mom found out. That’s crazy…but in a good way, seeing how she reacted. It’s probably good that you’re out to her. What about your best friends?

I know what you mean, I only know one person who’s out here and he’s not openly out. There’s some amount of homophobia in my school, but the funny thing is that it’s directed at homosexuality in general and there isn’t much discrimination against actual individuals who are gay.

I hope college turns out to be all you want. :)

I don’t personally know anyone who’s gay, but I’ve heard secondhand stories about gay seniors who…have now left school. And there IS a lot of homophobia here as well, but since I don’t actually know a homosexual individual, I don’t know how they stand.

I too really hope college is everything you want :)

All the gay people I know are SO GAY and SO CAMP that they never had to actually “come out” to most people. It’s weird. Apparently he worked himself up so much when he had to tell his parents and he was really freaking out, then he told them and they were like “well DUH” Hahaha.

I like how serious this conversation has become all of a sudden. But coming out to your mum that way had to have been rough! I’m glad she was supportive though. I don’t really understand anyone who’s anti-gay.

We actually had a looong discussion about that when reading Heaney in my Elective English class (read Punishment - the last stanza in particular). People are anti-gay because of that primitive fear of the breaking down of society’s institutions and consequently society itself. Obviously, that means believing that “society” is static, which it isn’t. You know what else is ironic? The fact that homophobia is so widespread in countries that are so overpopulated that they could actually stand for the birth rate to be lowered a little. Lol.

(Was that offensive? If so, I’m sorry.)

Haha I wish I knew some camp people.

I don’t think it’s offensive. It seems to me that a lot of homophobic societies (and societies that regard women as lesser beings than men) are also ones that hold religion very highly. I know it’s a vast generalisation but it’s true.

Thank you all for being so pro gay lol. Yeah I do hope college turns out the way I want it to. I now feel like applying to more colleges to sure up my bets. Haha, but whatever I chose carefully.

I’m out to my best friends. They tend to be girls though (yeah I’m THAT guy) so its better. Girls tend to be more accepting.

And Quasi - trust me, I had a field day when I found out Sathya Sai Baba was against birth control (I’m sorry if this is offensive, but come on people, its harmful to society, especially in places like India where there are so many below the poverty level)

Oh there was one guy I told who was a complete b itch. He stopped talking to me then called me a fg behind my back to one of my best friends. I was so pised.

Anyone NOT applying to Amherst? I wanna send my essay your way. :)

We’re a lovely bunch, gapyearstudent  Everyone is equal, darnit!!

As for birth control, most people I know of who are against birth control are men. Go figure.

Haha. Be my best friend too! I’ve always wanted a gay best friend. :p

I agree with both of you. And no, it’s not offensive, it’s totally true. India’s a weird place (and many other developing countries are too) and while in many ways that is a good thing, in many ways it isn’t.

And wutttttttt kills the guy who was mean to gapyearstudent by making another random guy sit on his face I’m sorry about that, man!

And I just have to say: 5 hours to go.

India can be freaking weird, yeah.

Haha I love you guys, you’re too nice.

Tetris, I’m gonna stay up with you! I need time to do my Princeton, Vassar and Amherst apps.

Quasi - I’d totally be your best friend if we ended up at the same college. I’d be all like are you quasi at any girl from India I meet. Haha.

On a side note, do you know if colleges pay for us to go to their admitted students weekend? I know Stanford does.

HAHA. That would be fun. And I’m holding you to that if we end up at Amherst!

I guess we’re all gonna be up all night then. tetris has actually gone off to try and get 4.5 hours of sleep. I don’t know WHAT I’d be acting like right now if I were her.

I don’t know about the admitted weekend thing, sorry.

I’d be freaked out if I was her, naturally.

Wait, how many colleges are we applying to in common Quasi, maybe we have more than one chance.

I’m applying to HYP (yeah, I know, stupid) Brown Dartmouth Amherst Midd. I assume you’re not applying to Vassar (please dont  )

Lol come on! We’re hardly competing against each other. We have way too many other people to compete with!

I guess we have HYPBD, Amherst and Midd in common. Lmao. More than one chance indeed.
