Class of 2014!

surfup, lets rather drink some vodka. Probably the only good thing to come out of the motherland :).

I applied to yale (fat chance i’ll be accepted). Thats about it. I am not an asian ranking whore. Besides, most top unis have a lot of desis and I’m racist against desis so…Also the competition is ferocious, I dont want college to be a massive competition for better grades…

Hey, we’re not ranking whores either! Hmph.

I like the competition, I’m the sort of person that (normally) rises to the challenge and then becomes on par or better than my competition.

Quasi, you are smarter than me. Look at my profile pic and laugh at my silly face :). No one can take your intelligence away from you. Everybody is good at something and when it comes to exams I feel that tetris is better. However HOLISTICALLY, you both are damn smart and intelligent.

I like competition too. It motivates me. I couldn’t survive without competition, which is why I don’t like Reed.</p>

cheeeeeese, it’s okay. I was mostly kidding. I didn’t do as well academically until class 11, so I see what you mean.

What’s wrong with Reed?

I don’t compare my achievements with those around me. I know if I’ve done well nor not. An environment where you judge yourself on the basis of what others do, is just wrong in my opinion.

I heard that the chem department in Reed used to distribute haluciongenic drugs in the 50’s. LOL

Nothing! It just seems a little unstructured, what with less emphasis on grades and all that. Like New College of Florida, to which I was also planning to apply at first.

But Reed is cool. If I do reapply, maybe I’ll apply, who knows?

"don’t compare my achievements with those around me. I know if I’ve done well nor not. An environment where you judge yourself on the basis of what others do, is just wrong in my opinion. "

I know that with my head but I can’t help being attracted to rankings either.

Quasi- Its the desi influence. I’ve been resisting it for the past few years.

Its not about comparing yourself with what others do around you. Its about being inspired to do better by the people around you. Which is why I know that I would struggle at a school that doesn’t motivate, either because of the students or the curriculum. I would be very meh about it.

EDIT : And yeah, as much as I know rankings don’t matter, it will be very hard to choose an unknown LAC over ivies.

I suppose. It’s sad, how I pick less prestigious options (Humanities, for example) and yet can be a total prestige whore. xD

Edit: It’s cool that for you it’s about being inspired, gaps.

Maybe its about the competition too. I just like to make it sound good.

Anyway, we’re all motivated by different things. Who’s to say competition is a bad motivating factor?

Also, cheese, I totally judged you when you first came on CC but you’re actually pretty unique. :p

Edit: Yeah gaps! It’s not, although it can be stressful. But then I like stress too.

Why shouldnt you be able to motivate yourself? Why shouldnt you improve for the sheer thrill of seeing how high you can go? Competition does inspire one work harder. But, you can get the same inspiration from yourself, from your own innate desire to progress.

You judged cheese? Why?

I judged tetris because I thought she wasn’t nice. LOL :)

Yeah, everybody’s got there own thing. You do well in competition, I avoid that type of an atmosphere.

hey cheese, i kind of dont like desis either and yes, i abhor competition. looks like i am not the only whacked out indian. hey, and how was I judged?

I thought that tetris was a boy from Delhi. Couldn’t be wronger  !

“Why shouldnt you be able to motivate yourself? Why shouldnt you improve for the sheer thrill of seeing how high you can go? Competition does inspire one work harder. But, you can get the same inspiration from yourself, from your own innate desire to progress.”

The fact still remains is that if you consistently get As without putting in your full effort, you (or at least I) would reduce my effort to do just above the minimum to get the A. Why not party and have more fun if the end result is the same? Would you REALLY tirelessly slave over a paper for 5 hours if you could do it in two and get an A?
