SE Boarding Schools <= 218, school counselor

Commended (national cutoff) = 201

Thanks NJMom. I’m not worried about the cut-off, but I wish my school would get the process started already!

Celesteroberts, would leave the wording as is so newcomers understand. Thank you so much for keeping the tally. Congratulations to all our NMSFs!!

I’m certainly not enjoying waiting on our principal to release the official notification, but I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt. He’s an excellent principal and I believe that even though the excerpts posted here indicate he could release this to parents, I will trust that if he is keeping it from us that he is doing so with good intentions. Since I haven’t seen the letter or received official notification, I cannot really share anything I didn’t know a long time ago which is my child’s score. Reports here of pictures and/or identities of students being released via social media proclaiming the NMSF status seem to conflict with what others say the letter requires which is that this information not be announced publicly until 9/10. I haven’t looked for or seen any of these personally, but I have seen reports that it is happening.

I’m just as ready as any other parent to have our child’s resume read “NMSF” rather than “likely NMSF”, but it will have to wait. If our principal is keeping it secret, I’m guessing he is afraid that releasing it may have a negative effect on a student. I would much rather he use an abundance of caution than to have any possibility of an issue later. I understand the frustration of those with kids on the bubble, but we have waited this long. I’ll hang on for the next few days knowing that life is often a grueling marathon and the wait is almost over. Congratulations to those who have received official notification, and best wishes to those like us who are still waiting.:)

@celesteroberts‌ I only know from one parent that her son was told by GC before a class.

Lets make this a Finish-Strong-Friday* people! Hopefully we can get some additional “confirmed” results today. It has been One Long Week for many of us.

I threatened to call NMSC yesterday but then got distracted with other things (like my actual life). I plan to call NMSC here shortly because our HS still claims they have not received any info from NMSC. Re: the post above, I have now seen several releases of student names/lists of students on social media, but I won’t go into more detail because nobody needs to get into trouble over an honest mistake(s). Wish I could say more, though, considering some of the sources releasing info! Biting my tongue.

Continued thanks to the posters who are keeping our running list updated, including @celesteroberts, @STEMFamily, @PAMom21, @Wolverine86…and everyone else I’ve overlooked (sorry).

Thanks to those posters who are joining the thread to share information! We’ve even had a few folks create CC accounts just to join us and share numbers, which is awesome!

Finally, congratulations to all our new NMSFs - and our Commended Students! (And all of US who have managed to survive the week thus far…)

Congrats to all that have made it so far. Met with our D’s GC and principal today. GC would only give the secretive head nod and the principal gave us a covert 1 sign when I asked how many. D’s score won’t help chart in SC.

D just confirmed the cutoff is 208 in Nevada. She got the letter from her counselor today. She scored higher than 208, but said the cutoff is 208 when I asked her.

Thank you mtrosemom. And hurray for your D! Do you think GC told her the number, or she has friends with scores of 208 and 207 who did/didn’t make it?

Celesteriberts, I think the GC told her. I asked her to ask so I could get a range for her younger brother. Nevada dropped 4 pts it seems; however 208 is more in line w/historic trends

Adding NV.

SE Boarding Schools <= 218, school counselor

Commended (national cutoff) = 201

Parents - I have a question…

So, DD is a bubble child with 221 in Maryland. Yesterday, I got tired of waiting so I sent a message to her GC asking him if she made the cut and below is what he came back with.

“We are not allowed to give out that information but with a selection index of 221 she is definitely in the range.”

I thought he was telling me “wink, wink, she is in but I can’t say yet”… DW thinks I completely lost my mind and I am reading what I want to read not what he is saying… So, the question I am asking is WTH is he saying? FYI – I didn’t tell him her score, just DD’s name so he had to look up her score if that makes any difference. I am going nuts here.

Honestly? My total outsider viewpoint is that he is saying “we were told to not deal with this until next week, and I have no idea what the cut is, other than last year it was somewhat close to 221”.

Yeah, that’s close to what DW said. Maybe I completely misread it.

@EastCoast1, I would have done exactly what you did. “Surely he wouldn’t say that to me if D didn’t make it, right?” But then I wouldn’t allow myself to truly believe it until I had confirmation. Hang in there. It makes me crazy that these people are not properly reading the letter and letting the kids - particularly the bubble kids - know. Fingers are crossed for your D!

I think MD was 223 last year, so I prob would have thought the same if my child had a 221 and was told by the person who has the list that they were in the range. You obviously knew that or you wouldn’t have asked! This totally stinks I agree. It’s almost as if whole states are on lock down!!

Keep in mind I’m typically a glass half empty sort of gal, LOL!

@suzy100, @PAMom21, and @greatfallsmom - thanks for your thoughts. So, the waiting game continues.

^^I’m in Florida with a 210. That 211 cutoff really stings, but I guess someone had to be right on the threshold. Sucks because there were a variety of proctor errors during my test that took a total of 5 minutes away from me throughout the entire PSAT. I reported it to the testing center supervisor who then neglected to file a report with the college board. When I called National Merit about the issue, they told me that I could replace my PSAT score with my SAT score (2200) if the supervisor had filed a report. 220 would have easily qualified me:(

What’s worse? Florida just announced a few weeks ago that any NM finalists who go to college instate will have their entire tuition paid for. I’m hoping that I don’t end up at a Florida school, but if I do, this situation will suck even more.^^

I suggest you go see an attorney as you have a valid claim against the test center supervisor, his or her employer, and the College Board. If you can show through a high SAT score that “but for” their negligence you would have had a higher PSAT, then I think you have a chance of winning your suit. You should also tack on as damages a couple of hundred thousand to cover the intrinsic value of being a NMF.

Make no mistake, the test center supervisor had a duty to file the report. You should be entitled to recover damages. By suing, and hopefully winning, you help to ensure that future test supervisors don’t screw over the students and cost them valuable scholarships. Don’t be afraid to force people to do the right thing.

If you can replace your PSAT score with your SAT score would that let you qualify?
