***Class Of 2015 NMSF Qualifying Scores***

@chucktaylor1‌ Actually I went a few pages past the one you posted from that old thread and post #540 said a student talked with their GC who had a booklet with all the state cut-offs and read off to them a certain state that folks were waiting to hear. So I guess even then there was a book out there. sigh

I reported that my son made it in IL with a 215, however I have information on what the state cutoff is.

FWIW, it can’t be the case that ONLY DC is 224. DC’s cut-off is set to match the highest state cut-off. It’s not derived from DC-specific data.

Did not mean to get anyone upset. I typed in NM to mean National Merit, not anything else. Sorry about the confusion.

@exacademic‌ What? I’ve never heard of that - how do you know that? No one has reported on the international score, and that’s always matches the highest too. Do they tie that one to the highest score or could DC be tied to that then? MA was confirmed by a poster as being 223, so that would leave NJ to stay at 224 if that’s the case. Why is that about DC being set to match the highest score? No one has mentioned that before. Thanks for alerting me.

There is a booklet but we just don’t know if it contains cutoff scores. I doubt that it does. Hasn’t the NMSC been criticized for not publishing cutoff scores?

Hang in there, @greatfallsmom‌!

Does anyone know if what a previous poster said about DIstrict of Columbia being tied to the highest score and not evaluated on its own data is accurate? I thought the big fuss made by Fairtest and others has been that DC Public school kids don’t have a fair chance because of so many private school kids from VA and MD who count for DC and skew the score. But if it is always tied to the highest than why would it matter how many out of state residents count for the DC semifinalist cut off?

Thanks @NJMom97. Good luck to your child!

D2 got called down for her official notification. 5 SFs at their school this year. GC wouldn’t confirm the cutoff for MI, but the lowest qualifier at her school is in with a 211. <:-P

SE Boarding Schools <= 218, school counselor

Commended (national cutoff) = 201

@greatfallsmom…I’m so sorry you’re going through all this stress. I really hope everything falls in your Sons favor. [-O<

IIRC, the lowest “confirmed” SF score we had for DC was 225, and the 223 was based on the unconfirmed score of a friend of that student that made it. Did we ever get a confirmation from that student’s friend of what her score actually was?

Looking back through that old thread, you’ll see that all of a sudden at #625 ALL the scores were known. The section just before that was the deleted section, but of course someone had copied it before the deletion. And I remember now that there were at least 2 posters with access to the book, not 1. They do seem to still have accounts, so I was wrong about that part of it. I presume the cut scores are on a page of their own. The screenshot that I got was, as I said, a section of the page that is a state list, and the state list pages that are sometimes available at some point online do not contain scores.

The one who sent me the screenshot was not from our state. The shot had all the names for kids at our HS and a neighboring HS. It was the real thing.

@Wolverine86‌ No, her daughter’s friend never got back to her. Even though her daughter is sure that her friend didn’t score more than 223, she doesn’t have confirmation. So all I’ve got is the student claiming to have the booklet that supposedly says DC stayed at 224. :(

@Wolverine86… still hoping for 209 here in MI, but congrats to your daughter!

FINALLY got official word from the school, as D learned this morning that she is NMSF! She shot me a quick text with no other info. She was comfortably above our state’s reported cutoff, but nonetheless I am relieved to receive official word. Good luck to all those on the bubble who are still waiting!

Try to keep the faith @greatfallsmom. I was also around the 2013 thread and saw all the posts. The book does exist, and it does list all the SF names and all the state cutoff scores. Why NMSC sends that book out to principals but never publicly publishes either the full SF list or all the state cutoff scores together is beyond me…but as a private entity the whole process is theirs to handle as they wish. Many of us don’t agree with parts of it, but this is the way they’ve operated for years. The person that posted was not a prankster, they were only trying to be helpful. I’m hoping they mis-read the cutoff for DC and your S gets good news, but if the unfortunate happens he WILL have plenty of other good things come his way.

The way these couple of students got the book or got access to the book is the same reason that there’s no consistency between HSs on how and when they notify students…THE PRINCIPAL DOESN’T READ THE LETTER THAT ACCOMPANIES THE BOOK!! I have no idea why NMSC chooses to give that info to the principals before their own public release date, and to be honest I’m surprised there aren’t more instances of people seeing the book given the number of school administrators that mis-read the letter with the login info and public release info.

@wrights1994…Thank you!! Fingers crossed for you that last year’s cutoff comes down a little!

Thanks @wolverine86. I believed the student, but it just seemed incredible that DC would be the only state to stay at the highest SF cut off. I don’t remember seeing a time when MA was not also the highest.

I just called the NMSC. The booklet that is sent to high school principals with the list of Semifinalists nationwide does NOT contain the cutoff scores. However, a separate guide is sent to high school principals that does contain the cutoff scores. The person I spoke to made it clear that this information is not together.

Thanks @NJMom97‌ That’s even more frustrating that the principal would give that guide out, and so many of our schools are on lock-down!

Same for me @greatfallsmom. It’s usually MA and NJ along with DC all having the same highest cutoff. I have heard in the past about DC falling into a similar category as boarding schools in that they’re tied to the highest of a group of states, but I’ve never seen that in writing anywhere on NMSC’s website (imagine that >:P ). Since there’s no information coming from NJ yet, it’s possible that their state cutoff could be driving the DC number if that correlation actually does exist for DC.

ETA: Just saw @NJMom97’s post…so that’s 3 separate mailings that go out to non-homeschool principals apparently. A letter with the principal’s login info to generate the SF letters, a booklet containing all the SF names, and a guide with all the state cutoff scores. Really makes me wonder about the competence level of a school that still claims they “haven’t seen anything from NMSC”!! ~X(
