Does anybody know if lists exist anywhere of NMSF by school? Or even by State? I have searched online for this before with absolutely no luck.

@deborahb…What usually happens is after the public release date, local/regional/statewide lists will get published in various newspapers. Many school newsletters will publish the names of the kids from their school.

Search for:
pdf “SEMIFINALISTS IN THE 2015 NATIONAL MERIT® SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM”

You won’t find anything yet, but if you substitute, 2013, 2014 , etc. you’ll see FL, IL and others. Someone has to put it out there for you to be able to find it, and some states don’t have any papers that do this.

The state lists are organized by high school.

I got a response from my kid’s GC and only heard that the chair of the counseling dept was calling in the SFs on Wednesday. Yes, it is exactly what I pictured. I’d confirm my kid’s status thanks to the local paper before the notification at the school. LOL! I don’t expect they even share the booklet or whatever, at least they should notify the status to the SF. They definitely did not read the instruction.

From the principal/GC training manual…

Reading is fundyment…fundament…phunderment…really important!! L-)

Any confirmed list of 2015 NMSF cutoff scores? If yes, please post here!! Thanks! @-)

@ililgoo…No scores will be officially confirmed until Wednesday, Sep 10. That is NMSC’s public release date for SF information. What state are you in? Have you looked at the listing on this thread to see if your state has been narrowed down?

wolverine- how many kids are in the senior year at your school? I am trying to get a feel for 5 NMSF out of how many kids.

@Wolverine86 I’m in VA. Since the commended score for this year is 201 which is -2 from the last year, I’m hoping the cutoff for VA to be 220…which is my D’s score…fingers crossed [-O<

My D reports that there are 24 NMSF in her class this year, out of about 180 seniors at her school. Should be one of the highest in the state, if not the highest.

@1203southview…Currently about 560-ish kids, but that’s not necessarily an indication of how many might make SF. There are a few schools here in MI that really emphasize prepping for the PSAT that end up with more SFs but have a smaller population of students.

If it is helpful, my son’s school is graduating 60 and they had 2 NMSF’s.

@vistajay Wow! Our school graduates around 150 and we have a NMSF once every few years. The high NY cutoff bites a little bit; I saw a list of all the NY names last year, and of the 10 pages, 5 were New York City addresses. That doesn’t include all the NYC suburbs! So we rural folks have to compete against that. Oh, well, there are bigger things to worry about.

“I reported that my son made it in IL with a 215, however I have information on what the state cutoff is.”

Can you please tell us what you understand the IL cutoff to be? My kid has a 214
Thank you.

wow, interesting stats! My son has about 90 in his senior year so it will be interesting to see how many are NMSF.

1203southview, we have 2 high schools in our district that each get 20-25 NMFs every year of about 500 seniors each. The other 2 high schools get a handful, maybe 10-15 together. Our state allocation is about 300 NMFs. So over 20 is a lot. They are public schools. What people call bi-modal. Around 50% poverty in district with 40% at the HS level. But an amazing crew of high achieving students.

edited to add: nobody does any PSAT prepping here. It’s an ACT state. The test is given on Saturday and kids have to pay. There is no emphasis on this at all. The school news advises that it is available and how to sign up for it. Very few take it as sophomores.

Our HS usually has about 1 NMSF for every 200 seniors. This year is no different, with 4 NMSFs and 800 seniors. Exactly 0.5% of the senior class, which is about the percentage of NMSFs in Texas. We are average.

@ATmyWITSend…I saw that post as well, but I wondered if they left out a “no” in that sentence. It’s possible they meant to say “I have no information on what the state cutoff is”.

In case anyone is wondering about the 1960 “confirming” SAT score, I did check with NMSC and as far as progressing to Finalist goes…there is no difference between a 1960 and a 2400. If you meet that confirming score, you fill that box in the progression to Finalist.

Where the SAT score MIGHT come into play is when they start considering which Finalists will be awarded the one-time $2500 “official” NM scholarships. That is a holistic review done by a separate board from the one that decides on progression to Finalist.

I received an email on 9/3 from national merit org saying my child has qualified as a candidate in a scholarship program by NMSC and it requests my consent.
