***Class Of 2015 NMSF Qualifying Scores***

@81223mom, I see. For my D, her essay pulled the writing score down so adding the 0 to mc helps her.

@samo8868‌ Not that I’m a big fan of LAUSD and it isn’t our district, but it is fair to note that in addition to the city of Los Angeles, LAUSD serves many other cities and several unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. Cities that are in or partly in LAUSD and have NMSFs include Rolling Hills Estates, Santa Monica, and Torrance. Also note that LAUSD as a whole has 80% or so of its students below the poverty line.

The LA Times news stories say LAUSD is the 2nd largest district in the US, so I guess New York City or Chicago is larger. IMNSHO, LAUSD is too large to be governed effectively.

Just to clarify, Torrance, Santa Monica/Malibu and Palos Verdes (Rolling Hills Estates) each have their own District. They are all in LA County but are not part of LAUSD.

so is it ok to leave the 1st choice school blank?

@suzy100 So how did you change that when you requested it be sent to the NM office? When I ordered my daughter’s report, I didn’t have a choice what to send—just had to click on that date’s scores and that generated a report that ONLY has her reading, math, and writing scores on it. I just want to make sure I didn’t do something wrong.

@samo8868‌ @Ynotgo @‌Angeline13

There are plenty LAUSD Schools that are not listed under Los Angeles in that CA list.

Here are a few examples:

North Hollywood HS
Palisades Charter HS
Sherman Oaks Center For Enriched Studies
El Camino Real Charter HS
Granada Hills Charter HS
Reseda HS

My Daughter is a National Merit Scholar (Class of 2014) From Los Angeles Center For Enriched Studies now attending Northeastern University :)

@81223mom, I didn’t do anything different. I just assume that they would send the report with enough detail for NMC to calculate it. If you are worried, call NMC and make sure they got what they needed. It will be fine! :)

@Joe2015, not sure of the answer to that so if anyone knows, please share.

But looking at the last two years, by my count there were only 43 NMSF’s in each of the last two graduating classes. North Hollywood HS had 11 last year & 21 this year. Granada Hills had 8 last year & 4 this year. LACES had 7 last year & 4 this year. Pali Had 4 last year & 6 this year.

I’m kind of confused about this. Is NMC the score from the PSAT test that my son took in 10th grade? He got 209 on that, so I think he is under the cutoff for Arizona. Is that right?

@chris17mom - the PSAT that counts for the National Merit Scholarship Competition is taken in the junior year. It should be coming up for your son. Good luck to him in raising his score this year!

Yes

It would depend on whether you are interested in a tuition scholarship. If you are, it would be a good idea to have one listed so that school knows you are interested in them. However, it is not hard to change the school based on where your child/you get admitted eventually and plan to attend.

I wouldn’t advise wasting the opportunity in listing a school which does not offer much in return in terms of a large scholarship for NMFs (think top 20). The highest ranked college offering anything of real value is Southern Cal which provides 50% tuition if one is admitted. The next one is Northeastern at 2/3rd or something to that effect. Neither of these schools is considered an automatic even for someone who has NMSF status. Going further down the list, there are many schools which confer recruited athlete status on NMSFs and it would be a bad idea not to show interest in at least one so that they are aware of your interest.

Essentially, find a school to list. Don’t assume listing one means you are locked into that school and can’t change your mind. One can change it all the until they commit to a school on May 1st or whenever the deadline is.

Oh great, @texaspg. Inject strategy into this. ;)

@Showingupforlife‌, nothing for Nevada yet. Hopefully one of the papers in One of the cities will post the statewide list tomorrow.

Preempting the questions! Next one that shows up - I am really interested in HYPSCMCDC school and I want to show interest in them by designating them…

Sure but they really don’t care because they have 8 or 10,000 NMSFs already applying to them so your NMSF interest designation is a throw away with no return.

@texaspg – I know what the HYPS stands for, but what is the rest, the CMCDC?

Thanks!

@asleepatthewheel - rest of the alphabet soup in USNWR top 10. :)

Today, September 12, is the last day to register (without a late fee) for the October 11 SAT if your student is needing a qualifying SAT score for National Merit Finalist consideration. The last two SAT test dates before the National Merit Finalist cutoff are: November 8 (October 9 registration deadline) and December 6 (November 6 registration deadline).

texaspg makes a good point about strategy, but it depends on which schools you are looking at. Alabama is going to give you the same deal no matter what and you can even send your app in way late for them. For schools like that there is no point designating them early. OTOH at UTulsa the basic NMF offer is a bit less than full tuition. Then they bump 40 or so NMFs up to a full-ride. Interest is hugely important to them in that, so listing them as 1st choice would be very helpful if you are applying there. Or at UMN-TC, where they enroll many more NMFs than they have of their larger scholarships. Unless your test scores/GPA are tippy-top, it’s possible that 1st choice designation(in addition to applying early) may help to ensure you get that NMF offer. And if you are tippy-top, they have a few extra university scholarships to hand out that stack with the basic NMF money and showing interest couldn’t hurt to try for those. But for most top 50 schools, I think it doesn’t matter for admissions or scholarships. Maybe BU’s $20K/yr is limited in number? But supposedly it’s totally about which are the best applicants. Still, you never know if interest might help a bit.
