***Class Of 2015 NMSF Qualifying Scores***

Here’s Connecticut:
<a href=“Connecticut’s National Merit Scholarship semifinalists for 2015 announced”>http://www.nhregister.com/social-affairs/20140911/connecticuts-national-merit-scholarship-semifinalists-for-2015-announced

At least the last couple of years, UTulsa has required applicants to have their names sent to UTulsa in the first pool sent March 1 (ie have UTulsa declared as first choice before March 1). But the student can always change it later if they decide they would rather have a different school at the top of their list.

It is interesting to me that despite all the notices to the press, we only have identified lists for less than 15 states. Is that a reflection on our searching abilities, or on the relevance of NMSC?

It is reflection of the secretive nature of NMSC where they don’t want to publish a single list but want every city, town, school to toot their own individual horn.

Our town/state isn’t tooting.

Our entire state isn’t tooting!!!

In fact, our school isn’t tooting either.

They all take their own time in tooting and most of us would have moved on by then. In my large metropolitan city, I have noticed that some school district announcements have taken as long as 2 weeks to make the local weeklies. Used to be that the major daily published the long lists in the past but they have stopped it over the past 3-4 years.

Do what I did. Hunt on the web to find some local news articles that have published lists of area semifinalists. Then e-mail the reporters and ask nicely for a link to the full list or for them to e-mail the full list to you. That is how I got the WI list. Or if you are really brave, go to the high school office and point out that it’s past the news release date and might they let you make a photocopy since none of the local papers are publishing the list. I wasn’t brave enough to try the latter. If everyone does that for their own state, we’ll soon have all 50.

I keep waiting for my son’s high school to at least tell the qualifying students. Not sure how much longer to wait but don’t want to come across as the pushy parent. Were it not for this forum I would have no idea that he is on the list in NY, and I expect the other parents don’t have a clue because many are not internet savvy. Blargh. This is an issue with big urban high schools I bet. Feeling annoyed at the moment though I am sure the high school has bigger fish to fry.

They haven’t said a word at my son’s high school yet either. SInce they get many NMSFs every year, I know they will eventually call the kids in. If they’re lucky, they may even get a cookie or dish of ice cream out of it. But it might be another week or more. He just texted me to ask how I got the list as our metro paper is dropping the ball this year. Their reporters haven’t answered any of my numerous e-mails and I tried 4 of them so far, some 3 times. So I sent list to S to share with his friends. At least the metro paper in our other big city had the decency to respond and admit that NMSF is ‘too small’ for them to be bothered with.

CR, I have tried to find any paper in our state that has published anything about NMSF, but there is nothing yet. It’s is very interesting how different states/regions/school districts handle this.

Hmmm, I see the Sun published a list of Clark Cty NMSFs last year on the Thursday, but that reporter hasn’t had any articles since June, so maybe he’s moved on. I just sent an e-mail to a guy who’s been putting out a lot of the K12 stuff in the past couple of months. If I get anything, I’ll forward it to you. Probably need to hit about 5 people to be sure of a response, though. You are right, though. Not much there.

Sent a note to the ReviewJournal education reporter too. This should be a big deal to people there, especially since UNLV gives full ride to NMFs, which I mentioned in my note.

Anyone has any information regarding the deadlines to log in/register, sending essay/ SAT score, etc. as well as essay prompt? A link is preferred. Thanks.
I e-mailed the counselor, she confirmed my son is a semifinalist. Also, she said that the principal herself will handing out the letter to students at later date, but she is not sure when :frowning:

The letter that the school hands over to each semi finalists says “please electronically submit your application to your high school official as soon as possible”
Does any one know how the application can be electronically submitted to the school. So that they can finalize and transmit to NMSC?

Appreciate any one sharing some info !

I contacted our local newspaper editor, asked if he had received the news release (after asking NMC to send it to the paper)? He said no, I waited and finally today called NMC again and asked them to send it directly to this guy’s email address. NMC said they send the entire state’s worth of names. Hopefully our editor will pick out the local kids to announce.

@Kathsj‌, I’m glad we aren’t the only ones waiting for the official letter with login information.

Today, my school called everyone who made at least commended into the office to tell us we have a chance at semifinalist. I know I’m in, as I called, but they are denying the existence of a letter, and are asking us if we got anything in the mail. At this point, I don’t know what to do. Any suggestions?

@ilovemath97 Simple solution. Call the National Merit Scholarship Corporation office at 847-866-5100. They will confirm whether you’re in or not in about 30 seconds. Then tell everybody that got called into the office to do the same.
