***Class Of 2015 NMSF Qualifying Scores***

hard to believe miami dade county is the fourth largest school district in the US but still no newspapers have reported anything. school hasn’t told us anything yet, and it’s unlikely it will next week.
if anyone sees anything, please post! last year it was the florida department of education that posted the list of the whole state on the 12th, but still nothing.

does anyone know the office hours to call NMSC?

@cttwinmom2015…Single sitting. What NMSC looks at and what weight they give to various parts of the Finalist’s package when awarding the $2500 scholarships is a big mystery. All they’ll say is that’s it’s a “holistic” process. They said that it makes no difference if a student has or has not named a first-choice school yet when considering each student, because the committee never sees that fact. Supposedly they make the $2500 scholarship decisions in January before they even officially notify the Finalists, but those receiving the $2500 awards don’t find out until March. :-/

@wolverine86 - Bravo on your daughter’s single sitting 2400! “Holistic” is about as vague as they can be I suppose, I whatever will be will be, we’re not expecting any $ from NM corporate or college scholarship. Still really happy for our son even if $0 come from it.

@cttwinmom2015…Congrats to your S being named a SF!! Whether it nets him any scholarship money or not, it’s still a great accomplishment!! If any of the schools that offer large dollar NMF scholarships interest your S at all, they might at least be worth considering as a safety school. Depending upon the selectivity and generosity with merit and/or FA awards of other schools he is considering, it can certainly lower the stress level of the application process to have an affordable safety school already “in the bank” while he waits on his other admissions decisions. Good Luck to him!! :-c

Are individual schools in Miami Dade making their own announcements?

http://www.ransomeverglades.org/NationalMerit

For some reason Florida deparment of education has not published it yet.

http://search.fldoe.org/default.asp?cx=012683245092260330905%3Aalo4lmikgz4&cof=FORID%3A11&q=national+merit&sa=Search

At our schools it is clear that outside honors and ECs are what earn the $2500. My D did not get it with a 4.0/2280/800 math2. Of the 5 kids who did get it, all but 1 had lower test scores. But they had amazing awards and ECs all of them. It’s like that every year. Presidential Scholars (my D was candidate but didn’t apply for the actual award), Siemens, 1st place in concerto competitions, top math team scorer in the state, top Latin and forensics awards, etc, etc, etc… Most juggling a couple of sports and theater in the mix. Really extraordinary in many ways.

@texaspg thanks! unfortunately the school link is for the class of 2014 (I knew a few of the students)

I read that NMSC doesn’t look at ethnicity/race. I wonder how true that is?

Sounds like all the states have worked over their newspaper people and got the state list… the telegraph system works slow here in Maine… any help??? Smoke signals??? Flares?? We’ll take anything!!!

@dobiesguide - are you looking for a specific name, or a newspaper report of NMSF for the state of Maine?

@celesteroberts Isn’t it true that the only test scores they see and care about are the PSAT and the SAT? The SAT IIs don’t factor in

answer: YES ! Can’t believe this is so mysterious and difficult…

Question. What do they look for in people to become a Finalist? My SAT scores confirm me and my extracurriculars are good but my gpa worries me. I got two Cs in the second semester of my freshmen year and a C and two ads my sophomore year, which I had to take online for hockey reasons. The Ds were in Spanish. The online system was convoluted and I had no idea how to work it so that’s why. Besides that I’ve gotten A’s and B’s, including straight As my junior year. I’m also taking all AP classes my senior year, including two maths. Will my 3.3 UW/3.7W gpa hold me back?

@Edwong81…It seems to vary from year to year how Cs affect advancing to Finalist, but the Ds are quite possibly going to be problematic for you. One C and you’re probably OK, 2 Cs were fine some years and caused issues in others. If there are extenuating circumstances surrounding the Ds you might have your HS explain them in the recommendation section of the school’s portion of the package. Good Luck!!

@pmmywest - I agree with you, just sent our son’s SAT scores to NM as part of moving on to finalist, but not the SAT subject tests (wish they did want these, he earned 800s in Math2, Chem, and French)

I don’t know what NMSC looks at. When you send SAT scores, unless you do score choice everything goes I think, including any SAT2s. Or is that not so? But it’s true that I don’t know if they look at them when they are deciding. I don’t even know exactly what sort of stuff went into the application as I never saw when D filled it out. AP scores self reported? I have no clue. Maybe S will let me see what’s in it. But I do know what sort of kids get the NMSC $2500 at our schools. It’s pretty clear.
