@phantomranger, I am so sorry. I hope you can find an equally satisfying option. God, I hope I make it. My SAT is on the low side (2050) but I don’t have any Cs. I don’t know if you would be interested, but New Mexico State University offers full tuition, room, and a $1,250 stipend to NMSFs. It doesn’t specifically say NMSF on the website, but from an article and emails to admissions, it does apply to them.
Nothing in the mail today but just like GoAskDad, our mail often gets delivered to other houses. I keep waiting to hear the doorbell ring & to find a kind neighbor delivering some misplaced mail to us. Sorry to read the posts from those that got letters & many thanks for keeping everyone informed. I’ll do the same if a letter finds its way to our home. I guess this is the “official” week to worry this year – and all the worrying from last week was just practice for all of us! Best of luck to everyone!
I’ve been confident for months that I will make it, but now I’m getting the jitters. What if my SAT score isn’t high enough (even though it is over 1960) or my essay or they don’t like my courses…
Lurker here, but rooting for all of you with kids on the bubble!
@albert69, I hope you make it, too! If you do not have any Cs, no disciplinary reports that are serious enough to be reported by your school to NMSC, completed the paperwork on time and your school did the same, and you got over a 1960 SAT + reported that score to NMSC by the deadline - then you really should be OK. I believe that’s the checklist, but other posters can correct me if I missed anything. I have no first-hand experience with this, as DS is our oldest, but I would not be worried if DS did not have that C on his transcript.
Best of luck to you!
Well, I hope one C won’t hold him back, @GoAskDad. I think that person that did make NMF that found out through Walgreens had one C.
Thanks, @albert69. I believe the C was in an AP class, which would be more understandable. And it was a mid-year grade, not a final grade like my DS’s. But I appreciate your good wishes and at least we all know that this waiting will soon be over. Regardless of the outcome, I will be relieved when it’s over.
I asked on the rejection thread, but this one seems to get more traffic. I was wondering about the online account, which in due time should stop accepting changes to “college of choice” for those that aren’t finalists, correct? I just checked, and ours looks the same as it did months ago, and we still have access to changing the college of choice. Not sure if that’s a good sign or not. (At least it’s not a bad sign, right?)
@PAMom21, I checked as well. Logged in to osa.nationalmerit.org with my son’s password, and it looks the same. He still has an option to change or add a “college of choice”. I don’t know if it means anything, but at least the college choice isn’t now gone!
No letter here in NM. I still have a chance…
@mittentigger
Was that one C in health in a class that is only a semester long? If so, I wonder if that’s the issue. A class that is only a semester long, and gets one C, would have a C for its final grade as well.
@suzy100 thank you. All positive thoughts are appreciated this week.
Thank you @albert69. S has another very attractive, non-NMF-related, admissions/merit aid offer from a small LAC (won’t at the moment say which b/c that might be too revealing). It’s a great school and they really are recruiting him quite thoughtfully. So, on the one hand, this isn’t a catastrophe for him/us. It is mostly just (a) bruising to the ego and (b) frustrating b/c it (apparently) knocks out another very appealing choice, Barrett Honors at Arizona State where, we were told, advancing to finalist would double the merit aid he has already been offered. That is the only situation under which ASU would be affordable for us as an OOS family. Anyway, good luck to all of you who have NOT gotten mail!
@PAMom21, I thought your idea of checking the “college choice” selection option in the NMSC portal was a good one, so I tried it today. DS’s account still appears to allow for a college selection change, but I wonder if they would really shut that down right away? I mean, it might take a while and/or they would want the student to be notified officially via the mail first?
My hands were literally shaking as I typed in the NMSC password. For our family, the NMF scholarship is huge, so it’s just hard to wait, not knowing. Our mail comes very late-day, and the postman & I had a chat yesterday, so I think he’s going to make an effort to make sure our mail is not mixed up this week. However, I realize that the letter may have already been delivered elsewhere, so that’s a consideration. Our mail delivery is spotty.
I considered calling the school to see what they know today, but I’ve already emailed the GC and I think they all know I’m waiting. DS is fairly oblivious to all of this still, but he does understand his options if NMF doesn’t play out, so he is probably just trying to play it cool.
Thanks to everyone for the supportive comments on the thread. Continued best wishes to everyone waiting. @phantomranger, I’m glad your DS has other attractive options and you are very kind to continue posting here, sharing info with those of us who continue to wait. Please keep us posted on your DS’s situation and I’m thinking of you!
Good luck @GoAskDad! Hoping for you that there is nothing but catalogs and bills in your mail today!
@GoAskDad - Good luck!
@GoAskDad You have been amazing through this thread with keeping us all updated. I am literally on pins and needles and hoping for the best for your DS!!!
@suzy100, @FromMD, @saismom, and everyone else who has been so supportive of my DS (and me) throughout this thread: Thank You. As I think I’ve said before, virtually none of us would know the other if we passed each other by on the street - yet I consider you friends on this journey and I’m grateful for the support you’ve given me and others along the way. Regardless of the outcome for my DS, I will still have great memories of this thread and of all the kind posters who’ve contributed over the past year +.
I came late to this thread but I would like to add my thanks to GoAskDad and all the others who so graciously shared information. I’m sure I would have been a basket case by the time official notice of NMSF came without everyone posting their state results. We are all in this parenting thing together, and it’s great to have a community around for support. We are anxiously hoping to get NO mail from the College Board before February!
No letter again, yay… I want mid-February to come so badly!
