***Class Of 2015 NMSF Qualifying Scores***

Not fair, @luvmygirls stole my guess! If I pony up the entry fee first, can I steal 202?

My thought was also 202, so if it is 202 we’ll have to split the winnings.

Barfly – As a “homeschool principal” (wow, I feel so important!), I hope that you are right about us receiving the letter. I will keep you all informed if anything arrives here.

Just so everybody knows, the reason all the rules have changed this year is because MY kid is involved. If you knew the general trend of our family’s luck, you’d understand why I’m saying this…

Anyhoooooo, thanks to @luvmygirls and anyone else who can post info to help predict the Commended score. We have DS’s Junior Mtg. this week (with his HS counselor) and I plan to ask her if DS will be notified by his HS if there’s any correspondence pertaining to Commended in April. The counselor is not very well-informed, but might look into this if we ask nicely. Also, I will wish for a lower Commended score of 200. Not that it will happen…I’m just going to put my bet on it, since my DS needs our state score to drop 3 points, back to the current mean. I’ve already told him that we need to move on and assume NMSF is not on the table - and he is basically resigned to this - but a teeny, tiny part of me will keep hoping until the very end.

@Barfly, my entry-fee check is in the mail!

What do you think about DE cutoff? Using the regression analysis?

ok, i’m in for 202 commended. where do I send my check? I really want to comment on luck. I have almost always (with one notable exception) been very lucky. It has never translated into lottery winnings (then again, I’ve only played a very few times). Usually, my luck translates into finding parking spots, not as useful since we moved to the mountains of CO. Does anyone remember the musical Pippin? There’s a line in a song in the play “It’s smarter to be lucky, than it’s lucky to be smart.” Smart/lucky which is which and how does one affect the other? Our kids are lucky because they have parents who care, we were smart to have these precious people to care about forever. Good Luck To You!

I will go with 200 in support of @GoAskDad.

Awwww, thank you @FromMD! >:D<

Gads. Jumped on out of curiosity. Don’t get me started on waiting til sept nonsense. Having a bubble kid last year, I still have some rants about that on ccm my sympathies to those who ate are waiting. Can’t believe nm managed to make it worse. My advice is make 2 college lists, namely the will apply no manner what list and the list if kids make nmsf not a great system but at least kid can roll with apps in September. Re kid who is taking June sat just in case, yes that is fine. There is info prob on here that specifies period that sat needs to be taken. June is wise cause kid can look at a retake if they don’t like score. And kids in the psat bubble range will likely have high enough SATs to get merit aid at a number of colleges…

Hey all! I am confused to what has changed? Timing of announcements? I would love it if somebody could clarify for me. Thanks!

@isaelijohjac, In the past, the top 50,000 scorers received letters right about now. Everyone who received a letter knew they had at least made the commended cutoff, so those scores would leak out here on CC and we would all know the commended cutoff. Also, each of those 50,000 kids could choose to send their PSAT scores to 2 colleges.

Now, the high school principals are asked to confirm that status of their students who fall in the top 50,000. Students no longer receive a letter and no longer can have PSAT scores sent to 2 colleges.

We are all hoping that the commended cutoff score will still leak out. Since it is a national cutoff number, we only need a few principals to share the info with students or a few homeschool parents to post here. Last year the info did eventually come out.

@barfly Thank you for the explanation! If D is homeschooled should I be expecting something? Thanks!

Got a score of 221 for CA for my S. We are guessing its low to qualify.

^Why is that low considering past data? Scores have never exceeded 221 before in CA…

CA was 223 last year…

I got a 203 on the 2013 PSAT, am I pretty much locked on/confirmed for NM commended status?

Yup. Think of how disappointing it would be for kids to lose by a couple of points.

CA scares me a bit too. Why was it so high last year? Many years ago, it was just a nudge higher than PA, with a high of 221 for class of 2011. I would expect it to go down this year, but by how much is scary to anticipate, especially if you are living it. Part of me fears the cuts are just going to keep climbing across the board.

Wherever the cuts fall though, there will be kids who lose by a couple of points. (I’m just selfishly hoping it’s not mine!)

@Jarjarbinks23, I think the highest ever commended cutoff was 203, so you have an excellent shot at commended. But we don’t know for certain yet.

@isaelijohjac, my understanding is that home school parents are treated like school principals, so you will get in the mail the same notices the principals get. Does anyone out there in CC Land know this for sure?

Tbh I wonder when a state SF cutoff would ever reach 230? o.0 Maybe if California ballooned to the population of 70 million people and college admissions were so competitive (getting into a rank #100 college then would be like getting into a rank #30 college now), that cutoffs were almost at 240? o.0
