***Class Of 2015 NMSF Qualifying Scores***

I didn’t really think of that. She kept saying that she had already been notified… makes sense though that if she scored high enough to be off the bubble she would know.

My guess is that she either meant commended or the score was so high for the state that it will be a NMSF score. I really doubt they would tell schools this early – it would leak out and be all over the place.

I think for any of D2’s apps that get sent in prior to Sept she will list NM Commended (since the cutoff score is known) and NMSF Anticipated with her PSAT score. She is far enough above the bubble and there aren’t any reasons (at least that we’re aware of :-/ ) that she shouldn’t complete the NMSF/NMF process.

@wrights1994 --our college counselor also said “the numbers are out” and “you should know if you did.” I know there is some “Top 50,000 Letter” (which we did not see) from the Spring? But, the counselor was definitely referring to NMSF. She even gave me a number—which was about 5-7 points above the usual cutoff for our state. Weird. And how do you find out the NM Commended cutoff score. I search on cc and I can’t find it.

@Skrunch‌, some of the parents who are homeschooling their kids and are considered the Principals of their school received and shared a letter sometime in April that confirmed a score of 201 as being in the “high scorer” category. From what I have learned from this thread, this usually translates to the commended cutoff, but the letter does not specifically state that it is a commended score. That should all come out in September when they let the schools know which students are moving on as a NMSF.

Thanks mtrosemom. That makes sense. So, does the Guidance Counselor contact the students and let them know? Is that the standard protocol?

Either that or the principal. Our school is very small so it will likely be the GC. It’s a big deal plus, to advance to NMF, the school has to do a LOR or something. This will be our first go-round, so I am learning as we go too.

Scary on the “5-7 points higher” counselor! She’s giving me heart palpitations, even though I know she is clueless. I went through all of my score stress back earlier in the year, and have pretty much settled on the “sure thing” (3 points above state’s previous high). I would hate to find out otherwise.

And may on this thread think that scores may be a little lower compared to last year. Our state was much higher than traditionally scores last year, ~4 points higher.

Ours was tied for its own maximum, for recent history anyway. I would really be surprised to see a cut higher, without a considerable change in the actual NMS program, and I think it’s too late for that. I’ll breathe easier when the cuts come out next month. So glad I have a PA homeschooling mom friend here, so I won’t have to wait for my slow moving school.

@wrights1994, is it possible she taught a senior last year that already knew she had made NMSF or NMF? That makes more sense.

@Skrunch, what state are you in? Is it possible that the high score the college counselor gave you was either from last year, when scores were high, or is it possible the number she gave was just the score of another student, perhaps one who assumes he/she made the cut?

From my experience, and this is my 3rd go-round with the lovely NMSF stress, most people are poorly informed but very confident when it comes to NM details! You will get good info on this forum, I believe, but even other places on CC have some bad info!

I’ve scoured the internet. I think the college counselor got it wrong (which does give me some pause). She indicated that the NC cutoff was 221. But, let me emphasize. I think it is wrong—or she confused it with the commended cutoff score of 201. 221 would be highest cutoff NC had ever had. I guess we’ll see in a month or so.

I like that theory Skrunch. She probably knew last year’s cut, and that the scores had increased at that time. Then when she caught wind of the 201, her mind turned that into 221, to make it make sense. Fingers crossed! We simply can’t have a 6 point jump, as that will leave my son on the wrong side, LOL!

I am not putting much thought into what she said… thinking she had no idea what she was talking about. We have been running in circles since that appointment to get him registered for Calc 3. Seems she didn’t put any of the information into their system correctly.

I do not think NM would let it jump by 5-7. 3-4 would be all that I think they would allow and that would be huge. I feel for you guys. We waited and sweated it out last year but my son is a NM scholar now and will be a entering freshman at Baylor in 3 weeks with a full ride (NM and a few other scholarships combined)! His little brother will take the PSAT this year so it may start all over again. We are prepping him more because frankly until my oldest scored so well, we had no idea how many scholarship opportunities this one distinction opened up. If you can get this thing, you have caught lightning in a bottle!

Yeah, I think the only way the scores could jump that much, given the data we already have, is if the NMS folks drop the number of qualifiers by a considerable factor. And even though it’s their show, I don’t think they would do that, since the 2015 contest is already underway. Still, I want that cut!!! I do NOT however want summer to end, so I’m willing to wait.

Brawny, Just an FYI that our state’s scores jumped by 6 points to a high between 2013 and 2014; however, that leads me to believe that they will not be as high this year as last year!

Hey all, is it likely that NM score for Indiana will jump from 215 to 220 this year? D got a 220 and I wasn’t worried but now I am. Also, if the score is 220 and she gets a 220 she made it right? Thanks!

@isaelihojac, I don’t think a state’s cutoff score has ever jumped 5 points. (Somebody correct me if I’m wrong.) I think the conventional wisdom around here is that the cutoff score this year should be the same or perhaps a little lower than last year’s cutoff scores. I think your D is safe. Congratulations to her!

This past year had some huge jumps. Look back to the first page of this thread. RI, ME, OR, VA all up by 5. Alaska up by 8. Almost all states up by at least 2-3 points.

I think it’s unlikely that there will be 2 years in a row like that.
