***Class Of 2015 NMSF Qualifying Scores***

@fnl012 see post #1011

does it seem as though in general, most of the scores are going to stay the same/go down? Specifically, does anyone have any guesses for CT? Last year’s cutoff was 221.

Is this legit? <a href=“ColRebSez: PSAT commended cutoffs announced; my bet for Mississippi Class of 2015 Semifinalist cutoff is 205”>http://colrebsez.blogspot.com/2014/04/psat-commended-cutoffs-announced-my-bet.html</a></p>

Have PSAT Commendation cutoff scores really been announced and if they have, is the cutoff score for class of 2015 really 201? This is lower than last year, could this be an indication that most states (especially those who hit a record high last year) have a decrease in cutoff scores for semifinalist?

How do you know the commended scores?

@browneyedgirl13 There were several posts on this thread back in April regarding the 201 score for the top 50,000 or so scorers for the class of 2015. Some were told by their high school counselors and others are parents who are “principals” for their home-schooled students. This is a single national score. Once semifinalists cut-offs are determined for each state, anyone below the semi-finalist cut-off for their state but at or above 201 will be designated as “commended”.

Note that state cut-offs for semi-finalists are not officially announced by NMSC but there is always a thread here on CC where people post their PSAT score and whether they were designated as a semi-finalist or not in their state. So eventually the list of semi-finalist cut-offs is deduced and posted.

For CT, I expect the cutoff to be 219. 220 is also a possibility. You may call NMSC on September 10 to know for sure what the cutoff really is.

I spoke with NMSC earlier, and confirmed that they will release the “confirming” SAT score for the Class of 2015 SFs to you via phone (if it hasn’t already leaked out some other way first) on Sept 10th. For anyone with a potential SF whose SAT score may be “on the bubble”, the registration deadlines for the Oct and Nov SAT tests are Sep 12th and Oct 9th respectively. If the “confirming” score were to increase substantially above the 1960 score it has been for the last several years (using NMSC’s M+CR+(10 x W-MC sub-score) formula) that will still allow for students to take any of the Oct/Nov/Dec SAT tests if needed.

Any predictions for CA?

when will the cut offs be released? I got 221 in California, really hoping I can get in as a semi-finalist

Wolverine86, Can you please explain that NMSC formula?

It’s more easily explained in words, @elsa4maria. The actual essay part of the writing score does not count toward the NMS verifying score. So you use your CR score, and your Math score, but for Writing, you need to use the two digit multiple choice score. This is only two digits, so if your writing score is 700, your MC might be 68, or maybe 73, depending on your actual essay (which is scored 0-12, and factored in for the final score). Take this multiple choice only score and add a 0 to it (680 or 730) and then count that for your writing instead of the actual score. The sum of the three is your qualifying score. This is more comparable to the PSAT sitting than your official score.

Wait was I supposed to have received a letter in April saying that I was in the top 3% and to give two schools for them to recommend me to? I scored 221 in California, and so I’m sure I should’ve gotten that letter, but I don’t really remember. My dad says he vaguely remembers, but I’m definitely sure I never replied and named two schools to which I wanted to be recommended. Does this disqualify me after the April stage if I never replied?

Sadly they stopped that part of the program I believe starting last year. If you are in a brick and mortar school, you would have gotten nothing.

Thank you PAMom21!

The suspense is KILLING me!!

@PAMom21‌ I thought there was no essay part for the PSAT? I can’t remember writing an essay, but it was so long ago honestly.

@binatang‌

Fingers crossed that the CA cutoff score goes down. The national commended score is down from last year, so hopefully that should be an indication that most states’ cutoffs will also decrease.

@‌onlythebest13

@PAMom21 was referring to the SAT essay not being considered when computing the SAT score needed as a confirming score to move from NM semi-finalist to finalist.

@STEMFamily‌

Thanks for the clarification. Do you know when homeschooled students will know whether or not they made semifinalist so that they can start posting it on CC? Like one person said, the suspense is killing me.

@onlythebest13, the letters will be sent out next Tuesday (the 26th), via pony express. Seriously, it’s not first class mail, and it does take a bit longer. Last year the letters were sent on a Tuesday, and the first documentation of anyone getting one was that Saturday. Data should start trickling in soon after that, so be sure to check back regularly the first week of September!
