What is the consensus on Texas cutoff at this point? I feel as though it will go down at least a point just based on numbers from previous years. Anybody taken a closer look at the numbers and have a better prediction?

@Dorhawk, I’ve been looking at those numbers as well. For a while I optimistically thought the cutoff might go down a notch, but I am worried about the 2400 students scoring in the top category in math. Texas had 10,000 more test takers this year than ever before, and that translated to lots of students in the top categories, even though the percentages are down. This year, there are 2400 students in the 75-80 score range in Math, 1166 in Critical Reading, and 1035 in Writing. Very similar to 2010, in my opinion, where those same categories had 2381, 1157 and 1511. The numbers even look similar in the 70-74 score range except for Writing - in the 70-74 range, this time there are about 1800 MORE students!

How are you looking at the numbers that makes you think the cutoff will go down? I need to hear your optimistic predictions!

Comparing this year to 2012 is more encouraging I think. Fewer students in both CR and W this time, but still many more top scoring Math students this time. Aaarrrggghhhhhh!!! Those Math numbers are killing me!!!

How are you Non-Texans interpreting the high numbers of high scorers in Math? Maybe it’s not an issue in other states, but in Texas, with 10,000 additional students taking the PSAT this time, Math has me worried!

I’m hoping that the growth in population here will result in more NMSFs being allotted to Texas!

I just realized that we might actually start hearing numbers in TWO WEEKS!

TWO WEEKS!

Remember back when our then juniors first received scores and we all thought EIGHT MONTHS!

But right now TWO WEEKS feels like EIGHT MONTHS!

So are you saying this year is a lot like 2010? But the semi-finalist cuttoff for 2010 was only 216. That’s good right? We want it low. You want it to be like 2012? But 2012 was 219. We don’t want that right?

Semi Finalist paperwork being mailed the 26th. State cutoff numbers will be available Sept 10. Commended certificate mailed on the 16th. This is what I was told today by NM.

Does that mean, if we get a Commended certificate, we won’t be semifinalists? My son is on the bubble…

@elsa4maria when I called she stated that if you don’t hear soon (she actually said to give it two weeks) after they are sent on the 26th then by process of elimination you can assume you are on the commended side. But you can know for certain on the 10th when you can call to find out the scores, or wait to see if you receive a certificate for commended.

So the commended list is mailed on September 16th, not August 16th…right?

And do you know to which address they are sending the semifinalist list - to school or home?

Oh I’m so confused! so if you get a commend certificate that means you are out of the running for NMSF? I thought everyone that made what ever score is required for commended got a cert and those that scored high enough for their state would also go on to NMSF. Is this not right?

In years past, the best way to get notification really seems to be hanging out here, and waiting for the home schoolers and expedient schools to share data. I saw 9 new posts since I last checked, and got all excited! We’re getting close!!!

@3scoutsmom, you should know based on the state cuts before the commended letters go out, right? That happens first. I’m hoping we’ll start getting leaked info by late next week!!!

@3scoutsmom Aug 26 mailed information for semi finalist. If you are not a SF then you will not receive anything.
Sept 10 she said you can call to find out the state number.
Sept 16 certificates mailed out to commended students.
You won’t get something from both mailings. You will get a packet for SF after the 26th or a certificate after Sept 16.

She did say they ask principals to wait two weeks to notify the SF people. So, yes the homeschoolers are going to know first. I will let you know as soon as I hear. (homeschooler)

Semi Finalist paperwork to homeschool homes. To principals of students in school.

So the 10th at the absolute latest, but very likely that first week of September, by one means or another. Given my school, I’m quite certain I’ll find out here first.

Will a 224 from Massachusetts be enough to qualify as a semifinalist?

@235423 Did you see the chart on page 1? 224 was last year’s number, so you won’t know until you are notified (or see it here) one way or another.

@isaelijohjac It looks like the scores have fallen from last year though, according to the commended scores

@bulbar, was your post directed to me? If so, then FYI both 2010 and 2012 had a Texas cutoff of 219. Lower is better!

when do we get letters

Anybody’s guess about Florida?
