The average high temperature for January 31 (today) is 60 degrees, and the low is 37.
I checked the date ranges for the really hot weather, and then cross-referenced them to the school calendar. Historically, it is hot for the first five to six weeks of the Fall Semester. The Spring Semester is not a problem because, typically, the really bad heat does not return until after it has ended. Climatologically, as long as you stay away from the Summer Semester, it looks like a wonderful location to go to school.

Yeah. South Carolina weather is very yo-yo. It was really nice out yesterday. I wore shorts and a t-shirt. It was really cold today and I wore jeans/leggings and a hoodie+jacket over my shirt.

About a month ago, we went from having a Saturday of like 70 to a Thursday of like 20. So it’s pretty unpredictable.

That being said, I know plenty of people who move down here and are shocked that it actually does get cold here. It just doesn’t get as cold as often.

As a transplant to the South from New England, allow me to translate AUGirl’s “It was really cold today” comment It is 47 degrees out in Columbia right now, at 6:30 PM. My brother-in-law in New England just finished shoveling the snow off his roof…again.

I stand by my idea that yankees will be shocked when they come here and see everything is at a stand-still for 6 inches of snow. My county shut down school a couple of weeks ago for five days because of the ice/snow. Not sure how long Richland was shut down…

AUGirl is right…it’s amazing how little snow is required to shut things down. In fact, this is the third straight winter that the town I live in has canceled school because of a FORECAST of one inch of snow.

Yeah everyone on here seems to be from out of state. But yeah all Lexington and Richland schools were closed for a week because of about 4 inches of snow. Today it was pretty windy and chilly, but like I said, cold to us is like warm for a lot of northerners haha

Hey to all you future gamecocks I’m currently a freshman at USC from New Jersey and I’m telling you- COME TO USC! It’s the best decision I’ve ever made. I turned down Clemson, Wake Forest, Tulane, Vandy, and College of Charleston to be here, and I’m beyond grateful that I did.

If you have any questions, just send me an e-mail at irishheartbeat.mc@gmail.com. This site was my saving grace last year when I was applying, and I’d love to help y’all out. Don’t hesitate to ask me anything, from the cleanliness of the dorm rooms to what the party scene is like. Good luck with hearing about scholarships, Honors, and Capstone!

Thanks for all the responses, I appreciate it. Snow is really great when you’re a little kid, and you get a snow day or two. Once you’re expected to start shoveling the driveway, the excitement wears off.

There’s not really much shoveling needed unless it’s one of our awful ice storms. Those suck. We haven’t had one in a while. Those really shut things down. I’ve had friends to lose power for as much as two weeks because of an ice storm.

But I should say, a lot of my yankee friends say that they can handle the cold, and then they move down here and get used to the weather, and then they start thinking that cold-ish weather is cold. xD

One of the women I babysat for grew up in New Hampshire. She said that something happens to your blood when you come down south. XD

I just spent my weekend at USC for the band clinic that they have for high school students and I’m even more in love with the school now.

If anyone’s a freshman, sophomore, or junior and in band, I totally recommend doing the USC band clinic next year. I had so much fun. Plus the USC Wind Ensemble is just one hundred percent amazingness. Their concert was epic.

Au girl, it seems like you have been sold on this school since the start. I wish that I was so confident. I am still confused about my choices and am still waiting to hear from a bunch of California schools. What made you love it so much this past weekend? What are the people like?

I wasn’t actually. I never saw myself as a state school type of person. I really only considered the school for the first time in October.

But basically, I’ve found that everyone who goes to USC seems to be genuinely happy there. The campus is absolutely gorgeous, but it’s also really convenient. They have a lot of good departments, so if you decide to change your major or are undecided… then it’s not that big of a deal, because they’ll have the a good program with whatever you want to do.

And I fell in love with their music program. Their Wind Ensemble is absolutely epic and their faculty is amazing. Cool Fact: Their trumpet professor has won two grammys. They have amazing music facilities too.

And the students helping with the clinic were very nice and friendly. Everyone seemed to just love being there and what they were doing.

I do have a question though for current students…

While I was there, they made sure that commuting students had guides with them to walk them to their cars, because they said that there had been “incidents” lately. And my roommates said that there apparently had been three rapes at the university recently.

I was shocked to hear all of this and wouldn’t have believed it if they hadn’t have made a big enough deal about it to make sure that commuter students were walked to their cars. =/

Anyone know anything? Either way… I felt completely safe at USC and had a wonderful time.

It is really safe here. However, your safety depends on your common sense. Would you take a lighted road, or a dark alley? I’ve been in Columbia many nights and have never felt in any danger. You just can’t be stupid and put yourself in danger…
