I was looking through the list of final decisions and noticed no one chose CCM, any ideas why?

My S is pretty stuck on this school. I think partly because he attended the summer program, so he has “hands on” experience there. So I was just looking for feedback as to why it wasn’t anyone’s final choice.

My S liked CCM a lot but chose UMich once he was accepted. CCM and Baldwin-Wallace were close 2nds but UMich was his first choice through most of the process. We also heard some rumblings about CCM chair Aubrey Berg retiring soon which could mean changes in the coming years. It might be something to ask them about.

MTMajorCook, I wouldn’t worry. CCM is a fabulous school. My daughter did not apply there because she didn’t like the location, but if your son likes it and he can get in, you’re all set. It is considered one of the top MT programs in the country!

Yes and the good news is that there are many great “top” MT programs and CCM no doubt has a fantastic program! My son went through the audition process last year and he thought he was sold on CCM too---- until he saw some other programs and got in touch with the “vibe” of each. Like most families who go through this process, we learned a great deal…not the least of which is there are many many great choices for conservatory-style MT training. I cannot say I am unhappy that my son found other schools he loved just as much -----
We visited the CCM campus twice…and both times we left campus and could not pass through an adjacent area for the yellow police tape around double-or-triple homicides. It was listed as one of the 25 most “unsafe” college campuses (#13) according to the Uniform FBI Crime Statistics (published by Business Insider). Given my propensity to worry, I probably would have been a nervous wreck.

I should add to the above post that my son was not accepted to CCM (after being put on hold), but I’m not sure he would have ended up there anyway given what he saw at other programs. At the end of the day, it comes down to what’s the best fit for any given student and where they “feel” they could be happiest.

mcpwhite - I hear you, we’ve visited there twice as well. For drop off and pick up after the summer program. We made the mistake of walking around and ended up on the “wrong” side of the campus. Safety is a concern of mine as well. He has a good friend that is a sophomore at CCM, she raves about the program.

I’m hoping visiting all the schools he’s applied to will give him the type of experience you S had.

Yep I’m a Pittsburgher…right now I’m not bleeding so much black and gold as the Steelers are 0-4…ugh.

My S is applying to PPU, he attended their international summer dance program last summer and loved it. He has a good friend that is a Sophomore there. We’ll be heading down to see Oklahoma soon!

MTMajorCook, Are you going to look at Oklahoma City university? If so, hope you will give us a report. It sounds like a great school, both for MT and dance, but S is a bit doubtful about going all the way out to Oklahoma!

Zebra runner: my daughter is a freshman MT at OCU and is 14 hours away from home. Although the distance can be a bit of a challenge, she absolutely feels she ended up exactly where she needs to be. She loves absolutely everything about her classes, teachers, friends, activities … It is the perfect place for her. She has found OKlahoma City to be a great place to live. they have seen the touring show of Wicked, shakespeare in the park, all the great performances on campus, Disney on Ice and they’ve even been to the zoo. They are definitely not lacking for things to do. As far as dance is concerned, they are leveled into classes during orientation week. if they are more advanced dancers and level in to more advanced classes they will be placed in those classes as long as space is available. placement is based on leveling, not your major. So they may or may not be with dance majors depending on their level. we had heard it can be tough for MTs to get into some dance classes. But our daughter has 2 dance classes this semester and was also cast in the choreo show so she is getting a good bit of dance along with her other classes. If you have questions about the program, I’ll do my best to try and answer them. I do hope you will go visit. My husband took our girl out for her audition and his first thought when he got home was: everyone there seems so genuinely happy. Knowing she would also get top notch training we thought …What more could we want for her? We’re big fans of OCU… Just wish she was a bit closer to home :)

vvnstar, thanks so much for all the info on OCU. I will definitely share it with my S, who is a current junior. Everything I have heard about the program has been very positive, so it sounds like it could be well worth a visit. I’ll keep you posted!
