Class of 2018 Decisions

Thanks fallenchemist. I thought you would say that. She improved her sat score 160 pts over three times. She was not an ACT person. She has everything ready for both scholarships, so what the heck. Also applying for outside scholarships. She vacillates between Tulane and UNC chapel hill as her faves. That one is a long shot for OOS even though she has parent alum. Thanks for all of your insight!

@fallenchemist - where do they give the stats for the PTA? My daughter got Distinguished Scholars and has a 2180 SAT. Is it worth is for her to apply?

Oh, for sure if she has already invested the time, then absolutely “what the heck”. It is so easy to lose sight of the big picture when the universe is shrunk to the size of the pool for these major awards. But a 3.85 UW, 7 AP courses and a 2120 SAT is a truly outstanding record that the vast, vast majority of students would love to have.

UNC Chapel Hill is a campus I like a lot, and the town is charming. So much nicer than Durham. As you say, OOS at UNC-CH is tough. Isn’t it limited to something like 18% by law? Or is my info out of date on that?

Is Tulane big on demonstrated interest? I’ve visited campus, attended 2 info sessions both this year and last year, and met with the representative who visited my school. My stats are low, 3.1 GPA uw and 2030 SAT from a very tough private school but Tulane is one of my top choices and I hope they see how much I want it

Tigersfan - They never have published the same kind of guidelines as they did with the DHS (at least as far as I can find), but since they are both full tuition awards it stands to reason that the criteria would be similar. After all, the point of the awards is the same, which is to attract the most accomplished students to Tulane that might otherwise attend an Ivy, or Duke or Chicago or WUSTL… you get the idea.

So I can’t say anything about your D that I didn’t say about Stilltay’s, except that her SAT is obviously higher and therefore more borderline, but offsetting that is her slightly lower UW GPA and a couple less AP courses. I have no idea where that puts her relative to her high school class, which is why it is impossible to talk in anything other than generalities about these things. But on balance, it looks like the two situations end up being similar.

If she has done the work already, or part of it, then give it a shot. Just be realistic that there will be literally hundreds of applications from students with 3.9+ UW GPA and 2250+ SAT competing as well. But sometimes a person with slightly lower stats but an amazing project (DHS) gets the nod. I assume the same will be true with PTA essays; there is just not enough history there to have many anecdotes yet. It’s just a longer shot, as you already know. In summary, Distinguished Scholar awardees have occasionally won the DHS in the past.

jlewwsss - Tulane is huge on demonstrated interest. You are right that your GPA seems low, but of course it matters how that stacks up in your high school. If the whole curve is lower than most high schools, they take that into account. Also how many AP courses you have taken can really help. Your SAT is about average for Tulane. You certainly seem to have a shot, and the interest you have shown definitely will be in your favor.

My son in Texas just got his Early Action decision today - admitted with Distinguished Scholar Award, $25K a year, and invited into Honors Program. It is his first college acceptance, his brother is a Tulane alum and a 3Y Tulane Law student, and he is thrilled. He is awaiting his other college decisions, but this is a great start.

I applied Early Action (obviously. I got my acceptance today via mail. It was in a white envelope with a very brief acceptance letter as well as a merit aid scholarship letter. I received 20k a year ie. 80k total over four years.

Here are my stats:
GPA Unweighted: 3.35
ACT: 32
This year I am taking AP Calc BC, European and Enviornmental Science. Last year I took US history, Calc AB and Stats.
I probably had a 3.8 for mid semester grades.

I studied abroad as well as did service abroad. I’ve been involved with various clubs and varsity as well as lead three (two clubs one team). I go to a selective private school in New England.

My teacher recs were very favorable. My essays were extremely detailed and well formatted. Most likely the strongest part of my application (I actually twisted and recycled my Michigan one). I was told by many people that I had to apply much earlier than the deadline in order to be accepted, I ended up applying at 1:00 Am on Nov 15 (stayed up the night of the 14th to finish).

I wouldn’t say that I am a good gauge of what a typical applicant should look like since my GPA is below what most kids have. My extra curriculars were very strong and I did submit my entire activity sheet via resume. I think this may be better as it shows how you present yourself in a professional context. Colgate, Dartmouth, UPenn etc. all want resumes and I think its because it shows how you present yourself to employers.

My D arrived home today from her Mission Trip, so was finally able to open her letter from Tulane. We were pleased to see that she was awarded the Founders Scholarship! This was a pleasant surprise, as her test scores are on the lower side. We are so excited to visit Tulane!

I hope all that haven’t heard yet get good news this coming week!

congrats to your daughter, Gigem86. The Founders is a nice award.

Congrats Gigem. I imagine the 3.9 UW GPA helped a lot. Good luck with the Community Service Scholarship.

Do you think a lot of decisions will be released this week for those who are still waiting to hear back? so anxious!!

I sure hope so, that would seem logical! The 15th is right around the corner. Can’t wait to hear back

I was accepted on my Gibson account on Wednesday (have not received a letter yet). A few other people from my area (Northern VA) also got responses. I have a 3.7 weighted GPA and a 2050 SAT score.

I sent my app in November 11th and have not heard back. My stats are not that great so I am assuming I got denied considering how many other people have heard back. Is the a bad assumption? Also, do they “deny” people online? Meaning they will post on Gibson I did not get in?
Thanks

It will be posted on Gibson, whatever the decision. I personally suspect you will get deferred, and hopefully you can get your ACT score up. Because other than that, you seem to have a fairly solid resume. At least you already have a good choice in Baylor. Congrats on that.

I was accepted early action into the Honors program as a Distinguished Scholar with 25k/year.
SAT- 2170
ACT- 33
GPA- 93 unweighted, 96 weighted
Good luck everyone!

CoryB11 what are your stats?

bromar - He posted them elsewhere. Look up his other posts. Just click on his screen name and choose from the menu that appears.

I’m curious as to whether or not being a minority factors at all into the admissions process. I’m an NHRP scholar and I’m curious as to how much this will help me.
