Class of 2018 Decisions

Cbatarseh Congratulations!
Can you tell us when you applied?

My son applied EA and was just notified he was deferred to RD
GPA 3.9/4.7
SAT 2240
AP Scholar with Distinction
Cambridge Program
Top 5% of his class
He visited Tulane last March as this is his first choice

OGTMGT - That is a bit surprising. Did he complete the Why Tulane section of the application?

Yes he did complete the Why Tulane section. Tulane has always been his number 1 choice since his freshman year.

That is very surprising. The Why Tulane part of the application seems to be very important. Tulane seems to not favor applicants they may define as overqualified without showing enough demonstrated interest. I’ve heard of instances where EA/RD applicants with a 2400 SAT score and class rank within the top ten people have been deferred or waitlisted on the basis of not showing enough demonstrated interest. Though it does seem strange as a visit was involved here.

And as you said, he did complete the essay. This is very puzzling.

OGTMGT- with those stats your S is going to have many excellent choices. Good luck.

Yes-he already has 2 great offers here in Florida

^^^Awesome! My D applied to UMiami and Rollins in FL.

If Tulane remains his top choice, I would definitely have him write to his admissions officer and state this very clearly. He should also still apply for the DHS and/or Paul Tulane scholarships. Not only is he qualified, but it also signals his seriousness about the school. The fact that he was deferred is not relevant to his chances for getting the scholarships, odd as that sounds.

@cooper1025 I think I applied around November 10!

Thanks everyone-my son does plan to email his admission counselor

Did anyone else receive a call from a current student congratulating you on your acceptance?

My daughter got a call tonight. It was from a student from our area. Nice touch.

My son is not home yet so I have no idea. I’ll ask him. He got a postcard from Hannah two weeks ago though.

Aaaaah I got deferred :frowning: I thought I had a chance for acceptance. I thought my writing was great and showed me accurately. Here is a rundown of my stats:
SAT: 2290
Got 800s in 3 SAT II’s
National Merit
National AP Scholar
Senior Class VP, started my own club that emphasizes civic education, Robotics Team founder, Congressional debate awards, etc.
Oh well. On to the next one. I tried to pinpoint a few of my goals in the near future and how I did my best in high school and how I can contribute to the Tulane community. What are the odds of acceptance to people who are deferred?

for those that have already heard back… has it been at all different times of the day or usually around a specific time? so anxious… :(

thingschange - It all depends on how serious you are about attending Tulane. Is it a top 3 choice or are you applying to 6+ schools that you would choose ahead of it? If the former, then you need to communicate that to your admissions person. If the latter, then just let it ride, because why would you care about getting accepted? Other than the (artificial) sting of not getting in someplace you thought you should have (and certainly your record seems strong, although you don’t give your GPA), it becomes rather meaningless if you are really much more likely to get into and attend somewhere else. That is what Tulane is trying to judge in cases like yours. It’s hard.

Sorry I wrote it spontaneously. My GPA is 4.93 W/ 4.0 UW.

I feel like my issue with test scores could have also hurt me. There was an incorrect address issue and after everything was fixed, it was December 1st.
fallenchemist, can I still finish my application for merit scholarships despite being deferred?

You mean the DHS and Paul Tulane awards? Absolutely!! In fact, that will show them that you are serious about considering Tulane. After all, these take some real time and thought to be competitive. I cannot recommend strongly enough that you apply for those.
